Received disturbing phone call related to the satellite signal.
Received disturbing phone call related to the satellite signal. Representative said I would lose service and need to upgrade my equipment at an additional charge of $199.00. Sounds like a scam and the rep was rude and pushy! What is going on? I told him I was not interested and would change providers.

Maybe is a scam. You would have better luck posting in the DirecTV forum instead of here the internet streaming forums for AT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW.

That was absolutely a SCAM. Was not a DirecTV employee but a criminal.
You are never required to do a paid upgrade. For changes to equipment, you call them, they don't call you.
What is happening is that criminals are trying to piggy back off a real DirecTV equipment situation. DirecTV has been shutting down the MPEG-2 (SD-only) feeds since April 2019. Going forward all of us do need MPEG-4 boxes and receiver dishes. However the MPEG swap is at no cost and without service agreement as is required to continue using the service. Affected customers should have been notified by email or bill insert, with direction to call the official DirecTV number to discuss options.
So if you are affected by the MPEG swap, then you call the publicly listed DirecTV number yourself. They will not call you. This is for your protection. Hold times are very long right now per Covid-19 having many call centers closed for the moment. If you were to list the model numbers of the boxes you have, then we can verify if any are required to be swapped, any you might consider an upgrade, or if you can just leave everything the way it is.
