DirecTV receiver is very sluggish in responding to the remote
Changing DirecTV channels may take up to 10 to 15 minutes to effect. Also, intermittently the on-screen image will freeze for 2 to 10 seconds

DVR/Receiver model number?
Have you tried resetting the box using the red button near the access card?

Tried all of the tricks I’ve learned during the 21 years of being a DirecTV subscriber, many learned from telephone calls through the years to the DirecTV support line - even the technique to “re-format” the DVR’s disk drive. Most recently DirecTV most reluctantly agreed to ship replacements to me - “re-furnished” 8 year old technology. One receiver refused to “activate” after 90 minutes on the phone - so yet another refurbished replacement was dispatched to me. That one took 35 minutes on the phone to activate. If seems the DirecTV data base is a Charlie Foxtrot when it comes to having Card#s, receiver #s, Model #s, and subscribers in sync. Adding insult to injury, the technicians assured me I need not return the defective units to DirecTV; however, one unit’s instructions said “re-cycle locally” and another said “Thou Shalt Return The Box Without Delay or face a substantial billing charge.” Two follow up calls gave the same conflicting information. As I live in a large house requiring several WiFi access points, I’ve been reluctant to embrace the “Genie” product - having talked recently with four different support people, no one could explain definitively how the Genie sends its signals to the remote units - offered speculation only. Can YouTube TV (at $49.99 per month) be far behind?. Amazingly, the FedEx charges and the time for me to take the boxes to the FedEx facility far out-strips the “value” of re-furnished units with 8 year old technology. It seems AT&T likely is trying its best to convince DirecTV users to switch to U-Verse so the DirecTV can dissipate into nothingness.

Sounds like the box needs replacing.
As for the Genie, that should be ok as long as you do not replace any full receivers with Mini Genie Clients, or get the Genie-2 (HS17) that is a Client only system. All the boxes still connect on the coax. Simply put the Genie is a 5 tuner HDDVR. I would also avoid wireless Clients generally, but if you are already having to use access points for other devices then wireless Clients would not be ideal for your home for a few reasons.
What are the models of each box you have?
Which one is having the problem?
