Equipment upgrade

I received a call telling me I had to upgrade my equipment due to a satellite change. My equipment is a year old— was told I will loose tv is I didn’t do it and of course it was expensive. Scam or for real?

Scam!! DTV can't change the sats in orbit.   DTV is however shutting down their SD MPEG2 channels that will require them to replace the dish and SD MPEG2 receivers for free for any customers still using them but you should have HD MPEG4 dish and receivers.

The call was a scam. DirecTV doesn't change satellites in orbit otherwise that shutdowns everything. And they don't call you.

There is a real required swap from legacy boxes that are MPEG-2/SD-only. But that is a complimentary swap which you call DirecTV to do (so you know it is on the up and up).

What are the models of each box you have? That way you know if you should call DirecTV or not.

Just had a call from a scammer who tried to get me to upgrade my equipment for $450 and in return I would get $80 off my bill for the next 24 billing cycles.   Sounded too good to be true.   They left their name and phone number to return the call when I made my decision.   I called DIRECTV and they assured me this was a scam and they never call you to upgrade their equipment!   Don’t be fooled — if it seems too good to be true check it out!

You get a free upgrade every 2 years so there is no need to pay for one.

Glad you were cautious. You just explained the bare bones of how the most common version of this scam goes.

We in the forum can give guidance on if your boxes will need to be swapped or not, but we will not give you personal contact info to do so. We only reference the official DirecTV customer support number. That way you can call the publicly known number and be confident you are speaking with the company.

I wasn't thinking today and I fell for the scam.  So, what is going to happen?  He wanted the number of my receiver  and  as well as the receiver ID.  He was not American.  He said I would be charged 200$ but would get 50$ off the bills for 2 years.  I should have started thinking then.  He said I would get the new box in the mail but I didn't give him my address or anything.  However, he got the receiver id so he probably got all the info.    The Caller ID did say ATT Directv  970-313-0600   What do I do now?

Call DTV and cancel the replacement if ordered, then change or place a password on the account.  Caller id is easily spoofed.  Be ready for more scams as they will sell your info.

I looked up the number and it has been reported as a scam number.  I'll called Directv tomorrow.  I tried to do a chat tonight but they were closed.    thank you for your help!

Don't use chat. They have been questionable about information provided and have limited options as they are only supplemental to customer support. Plus there are no transcripts saved to your account so record keeping on that end is not priority.
