Genie 2 an upgrade?

I have 4 HR24-500 receivers in my home.  Customer service tells me I should ‘upgrade’ to the Genie 2 system.  Do I really want to do this? Is the G2 system really technologically advanced?  Does it cost the same?  Does it have any additional features?

Thanks for any advice…

The HS17 Genie2 is a tower that is not connected to any TV has a 2TB hard drive but it is a client only system hard capped at 7 tuners you have 8.

They are not making anymore HR24 so they are running out of replacements.

imho that would be a massive downgrade. You already have eight tuners, and much more flexibility than the HS17 has.

If you have four HR24s then the Genie-2 (HS17) is a huge downgrade.

You currently have 8 tuners. Genie-2 has 7.

Each box works independently. Genie-2 shares settings to all TVs.

Box goes down, you can still use others. Genie-2 goes down, that is all TVs.

Lose all existing recordings as cannot keep HDDVRs, only allows clients.

What would be an upgrade is replacing one box, only one, with a Genie. Most likely HR54, unless any HR44s might still be available. This is 5 tuners and 1TB space compared to the 2 tuners and 500GB of an HR24. The regular Genie allows you to keep your other HDDVRs and works with them, unlike the Genie-2.

If you don't already have Whole Home DVR, this would add $3 to your monthly bill next to your existing $10 HD and $10 DVR services. This allows you to watch the recordings of any box on any of your TVs. Just be caught up on the recordings of whichever box you replace as they don't transfer over.

The Genie does have Picture in Picture (PiP) feature if that matters for you. Genie-2 does not as clients can only use a single tuner each.

Thanks for all the input, I think I will just stay with my current setup!  I hate to have to learn a whole new system anyways...

The regular Genie is a more advanced HDDVR. More tuners and recording space. Wouldn't really be learning a whole new system. But if your tuners and current recording space are enough, then fair enough. And you don't need the Genie for Whole Home DVR, but the Genie does require the service as it is DirecTV's Advance Whole Home HDDVR.

The Genie-2 on the other hand can be quite awkward as you understand all the restrictions by having clients of it instead of HDDVRs.

The only reason for making a change would be if you wanted to go to 4K. Even then the best path would be to replace one of the HR24s with an HR54, and anoyther one with a C61K client. Definitely not an HS17 unless you want two 4K clients.

I don't know what direcTV Help is going to tell you because for some reason they want it to be a secret.

Though 4K is an option, it is not the "only" reason. Replacing 2 HDDVRs to get a Genie and the 4K Client is a very minor upgrade. Plus, the OP doesn't want to deal with a new setup and its quirks.

I would only upgrade an HR24 to a Genie (no other boxes replaced) if they needed more tuners to avoid recording conflicts.

I think @DIRECTVhelp (Felipe) is looking to score an upgrade. The OPs questions have been answered so I cannot see what more they are trying to contribute, and by DM (in private) no less.

Yes, I've made my decision.  I have HD DVR with whole home DVR service, so that is what I am keeping!  My only problem is getting thru to the correct person at DIRECTV to cancel my appointment for installation of the G2 system.  I called, was transferred three times, and still didn't get to the right person...Finally gave up.  Guess I will just tell the installer I don't want it...
