H24 Networking
So I get this email from DirecTV saying my receivers are not connected to the internet. They are connected to my LAN and my LAN connects to the internet just fine. I have documented that each of the 3 H24 receivers I have on my network are constantly making DHCP requests of my gateway as logged on my router. I had documented previously that they are attempting to allow media sharing with other devices on my LAN. I have also documented that they are trying to reach the internet using a hard-wired IP address in the 169.254.*.* range. Now since my LAN uses a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 these attempts to get to the internet with 169.254.*.* will not work. So I must further assume that since the H24 devices are using 169.254.*.* is the reason why I received the email from DirecTV that my receivers are not connected to the internet. Why would I want an H24 to connect to the internet? Maybe DirecTV is no longer with ATT as the categorizations available no longer allow that choice... then I was told the DirecTV Forum is now separate from the ATT Forum... weirdness - anyway seeing ATT distancing from DirecTV I guess DirecTV days are numbered. Broadcast TV has gone down the tubes anyway, what with woke culture and all this identity stuff. Sad that such a good thing has been left to die in the field.

The only reason to connect an H24 to the internet would be for on demand content. I’m not sure if an H24 can connect directly to your router or if you need an internet connection kit, I’m sure one of experts here can explain if you do want them internet connected.

and the 169 etc addresses are nothing to do with the internet. They are "link local" addresses the boxes use to communicate with each other when you have a "whole home" setup.

If all he has are H24s he can't use Whole Home or On Demand.

That's correct. He needs at least one DVR.

DirecTV is still owned by AT&T. They have simply added in a co-owner to spin off the company a bit to (hopefully) give more specialized support since AT&T bit off more than they could chew.
If you have no HDDVRs, then the only purpose of connecting an H24 to internet would be ordering PPVs by remote and perhaps the anonymous viewing data. With no DVR there is no storage for On Demand downloads.

Yes as documented before, reality is my router is logging repeated DHCP requests coming from each of the H24 devices, this is similar to a IP Flood hack that attempts to overflow the router to compromise it. So why would I get an email telling me that my devices are not connected to the internet... and as documented before these H24 devices receive the same programming code as a DVR version (H24R ... ) so they keep trying to media share, whole home polling etc... given then that the 169 addresses are only link local... my subnet mask would prevent that from working - doesn't sound right to me... a residential NAT'd LAN of 192.168.1.1 would have subnet masking of 255.255.255.0 - so 169 would not pass thru on the LAN leastwise outbound. Because of the repeated DHCP requests, many routers will mark those MAC addresses as banned and block all traffic. Thanks for all your inputs.

You subnet mask will not remove the 169 messages because they are on a "private" LAN

As you have no DVRs (i.e HR24, not H24R), I personally would just disconnect the boxes from internet all together. Then there is no issue with your home network of the boxes trying to connect to services that are not available.
