HD DVR Hard Drive Space

I was just wondering if there was a way to increase the Hard Drive space? I know that you can just switch out the existing Hard Drive BUT that will void any warranty or protection plan. I noticed that there is a USB input on the front and didn't know if attaching an external drive would increase the recording space.
