High-definition question

Right now I am receiving the broadcast networks {CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS and CW} from DirecTV not in high definition. I think most of the channels come out of Los Angeles and New York City. I get both the East Coast and West Coast. They are definitely not local channels for me. I see that as of June 1 I will not be able to receive those channels and will have to switch to just getting the local channels. I get them in standard definition and high definition. I am wondering if I will have to switch everything to high definition in order to receive the local channels. I hope you understand what I'm trying to stay.

Thank you very much in advance.

Distant networks have never been in high definition your actual locals are in high definition. The distant networks are going away in June.

DNS channels are the feeds that the networks use to feed their local stations/affiliates and one would assume they are in HD and technically it is only one feed as the networks are backing themselves up while the West Coast is broadcasting their local feed they are also broadcasting the New York feed on New York time while New York is doing the same with the West Coast feed so if something happens on either end they can switch to the operating feed.

HD receivers can be setup to output 480 4:3 to SD TVs

The East/West coast feeds are DNS channels. Since those are a special exception service for customers outside the broadcast area (no locals of their own), they have only ever been provided in a SD feed.

Those DNS channels are preparing to go away as Congress did not renew the law that allows them. The STELLAR act expires June 1, 2020.

Check www.directv.com/locals to verify what you should be getting. It depends on the individual channel if they are providing an HD feed to DirecTV or not, but in most cases they are.
