Hooking up new direct tv gemini box to h44 direct tv receiver and stereo receiver
I have ordered the new Dirct Tv Gemini box which will connect to my wired satellite Direct tv H44/500 receiver. I want to run the audio through my stereo receiver. Is this done by connecting an HDMI cable from the H44 to the stereo and then anothesHDMI from the stereo to the tv? If not, how do I do this?

I assume your receiver does NOT do video switching?
Normally you would like running the audio/video through the receiver, then your synchronization between audio and video will be good.
But also the question of 4k looms.
So, more about your receiver please.

If this is a co-locate setup you will only need to connect HDMI to the Gemini. It will connect to your Genie with an Ethernet cable. The Genie will no longer have video capability and will act as a headless server. I am curious, do you have an H44 Genie Lite or is it an HR44 Genie DVR?

My equipment is a sony 4k tv, a direct tv H44/500 receiver, and a 10 yr old Onkyo stereo receiver. I do not think the stereo receiver does video switching, as I don't even know what that is.
Now I have the H44 running an HDMI to the stereo and then an HDMI to the tv via a ARC3 input. The direct tv remote works everything.
I am hoping I can do a similar setup upon receiving the new Gemini box. The question is do I run the HDMI from the Gemini or the old H44 to the stereo, and then (as now), an HDMI fromthe stereo to the tv via ARC channel? Sounds like it goes fromthe Gemini.
Thanks

AFAIK the H44 is not compatible with the Gemini as there is no hard drive to buffer On Demand or the apps and it is barely compatible with the HR54.

Are you sure it's an H44 or is it an HR44? H44 is a Receiver with no hard drive. HR44 is a Genie DVR.

litzdog911, Thanks for your question. I misstated and it is a HR44 with a hard drive.

Just to answer that question, my denon takes the hdmi from my gemini, then will send the video to the tv, and the audio comes out of the speakers... switching to blu ray does the same, single hdmi into the receiver and it switches the video out.
Since you have 10 year old receiver, it almost for sure would not switch 4k video.
This is the simple configuration.
When I had an older receiver, i sent the video directly from the DTV box to the TV, and used the TV's inputs to switch between dtv and other inputs.
I took the digital audio output from the dtv box and put into the receiver.
so to watch TV, I used the TV remote to switch to use the video input from the DTV box, and used the receiver remote to use the audio input from the DTV box.
But I think you have other issues.

AFAIK the Gemini doesn't work with either the H/HR44.

So if he ordered a Gemini, do you think they are sending a Genie 2 also? Or a different DVR?

I think the computer will kick it out and they get nothing or a mini.

The Gemini will work with either the HR44 or HR54 just fine. With a co-locate setup they are not charged for the additional location because the video is disabled from the Genie as stated before.

@Good4u
That's what I assumed as well. Don't see why the Gemini can't work with an HR44 if it does with an HR54/HS17. Beside the HR44 not supporting the 4K channels the Gemini should work as intended.

To clarify my previous answer, DirecTV has been sending Gemini's out to folks with existing HR44s and HR 54s. These are "co-located" with the Genie and then can be connected with an ethernet cable directly to the Genie. This eliminates the need for either a video bridge or additional coax cabling. The video output on the Genie is then disabled so it becomes a headless server similar to the HS17. If you hook up an HDMI cable to the Genie all you will get is a message saying something to the effect that it is being used as a server. So in this case they are not charged for the additional box because the Genie is not being used to provide video.

A question to gregeusa,
I may get a new AV receiver and wondered which Denon you have that works fo 4k? Denon just came out with an 8k receiver 900h but that seems overkill for me. Thanks
