ir and rf on the receiver

I have one of my receivers mirrored using a modulator.  I have an extra ir remote.  I was wondering if I can use the IR locally and the RF in the other room for the same receiver?  Or in other words, can a receiver be used with two different remotes, one IR and one RF without switching the settings every time?  Or do I need another RF remote to accomplish what I need?
