Need an upgraded reciever, but not a genie.

I just purchased a new High Def TV that requires a hdmi cable, but my Directv receiver is 10 years old and doesn't have a hdmi output on the back.  I cant use the new Genie receiver because it needs a high def satellite dish to work properly, but satellite dish is standard def and can't be replaced because of trees in the line of site. Does Directv offer another reciever, maybe a slightly older model , that will work with my  standard def satellite dish, but still have a hdmi output on the back?

Nope, your SD dish is obsolete when DTV finishes shutting down the MPEG2 channels

No -they don't offer one --what you can do is get a HD video converter (box) CVBS/HDMI to HDMI 720p/1080p --that will allow you to take rca cables from the Receiver- Yellow Video & White and RED audio --connected to the above (box) Then connect a HDMI Cable to your new TV.

I use one to connect my VCR  --as it doesn't have a HDMI connection.

DO a internet  search for the CBS/HDMI converter box to find the best price.

This is more complicated than you would like.

First, almost all TVs even hidef ones have red/white/yellow video inputs. Sometimes thay are shared with other connectors. You will need to look in the user manual to find out. What they often don't have is composite video connectors (coax) which you probably use right now. But the receiver almost certainly has red/white/yellow outputs, so the chances are you can use your current setup.

But, moving along, your signal is only SD and many hidef TVs do a very poor job of displaying SD signals. A Directv HD receiver can be set up to only send SD signals to your tv but your current receiver and dish are obsolete and directv will be removing SD signals from the 101 satellite soon.

Directv has a program for free replacement of SD receivers and dishes but if you really can't see the HD satellites that's a big problem.

Is there nowhere on your property where you can see sats at 99, 101 and 103? Pole mount maybe? You used to need the 119 satellite and for many people that was impossible due to line of sight, so they couldn't have HD.

You can get apps that will show you where the satellites are and if you have one of those on your phone you can walk around to check if you have any chance  of line of sight

Regardless if Genie or not, unfortunately your dish must be replaced. DirecTV has been shutting down their outdated MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. So you need an HD capable dish going forward to receive the signal.

Since your receiver doesn't have HDMI, then that is MPEG-2 as well. You can connect it a newer TV by the A/V (red/white/yellow) plugs for now. But long term you will need to prepare for newer equipment. DirecTV is doing a complimentary MPEG swap program. Tech on site would have to double check line of sight with the trees to see if it could work. Otherwise if you cannot get line of sight then you will need trees trimmed or to prepare for a different service in the future.

What is the model of the box(es) you have now?

D12 is the last MPEG-2/SD-only non-DVR made. Fair comparison, though I would say not so much Model T, but more akin to the last generation of cars that used Regular (leaded) gasoline before it phased out to Unleaded only. It was even able to be used in conjunction with a Genie setup as could handle SWM, though not Whole Home DVR, so gave more flexibility while people prepared for full replacement.

If the D12 is the only box you have at all, then the closest equivalent for a swap would be H25 (the currently available non-DVR model). Genie should really only be used if you have a DVR model already.

Just talked to Directv for an hour...they will not upgrade me to a more modern receiver...other than the Genie, which won't work with my satellite..so that (Edited per community guidelines).  But thank ya'll for all the input!

You are not understanding this. There's no point in trying to upgrade your receiver because pretty soon your dish won't work, even with your D12. They will soon just be doorstops. You have to find some location that will see 99/101/103 otherwise you will be unable to watch directv at all.

Thank you, yes I do understand. Just trying to use my new TV right now till I have to spend BIG bucks to get those monster trees cut from my line of site. May end up switching to Dish soon.

what's the model of your TV?

and 99 and 103 are so close to 101, are you sure you do not have line of sight?

All current boxes available will not work with your satellite. Everything that used the old system has been phased out. Genie/Mini Genie Clients and the H25, which are all SWM-only and require a MPEG-4 receiving dish, is all that has been available for some time now. This was all in preparation for the shutdown of the old feeds.

If they are only using the Genie for MPEG swap and leaving the H25 for upgrade only, that is unfortunate. The H25 would be a more appropriate swap as is not a DVR, so would be the closest in capability. Unless they were offering a Genie Lite (H44) as a swap option as though built to accept DVR capability, doesn't have it by default with a DVR upgrade kit being optional.

Replacing receiving dish and D12 accordingly is the only way to continue receiving DirecTV service. You can choose to place the order and if they get line of site then you are good to go. And if tech confirms still a line of site problem, then you either take care of trees or seek a different service.
