If you got a new DVR, it has to download the guide info (the recording scheduler). Usually the guide is fully ready within about 24 hours.
What are the models of each box you got?

Ok so got the Genie-2 (HS17 is only model so far) which is the only DVR as forbids others. The Genie Mini Client is either model C41W or C61W, as only 2 models to date.
As it downloads from the satellite, you should be able to schedule some recordings. The 24 hours is when it should be fully ready from when the tech installed everything.

Wait it says the hard drive failed?????
Call DirecTV back and get that replaced ASAP.
You could try a red button reset first, but with that failure message I am very concerned.

To be clear, you should be able to record immediately upon installation whatever shows are appearing in the guide. But as has been said it will take a few hours for the guide to completely fill in. When you get your new one make sure you can record before the tech leaves.

The guide data is only needed for setting up series or future recordings, you can press the recording button on any channel at anytime.
