satellite "Ethernet loop detected" solved!

I had an Ethernet loop detected issue with my Satellite. I have HR44-500 genie, three C41w genie minies , and a DirecTV wireless media bridge (wireless bridge allows the C41 to connect to the HR44 w/o needing a coax connection in each room). My "media box" is in my basement.  This box has all the coax and Ethernet cables - my house is prewired for both. When we moved into our new home, I brought my equipment with me. I also use my own modem and router (separate devices) for my Internet connection.  I also used a few Netgear switches so more than one device in any room can be connected via an Ethernet connection.  I have a 12-port switch in the basement that is connected to my router – that is where ALL my Ethernet connections are made to each room that has an Ethernet port.

Anyway, back to the topic: I saw the DECA (DCAU1R0-01) was connected to my DirecTV cables via a 4-way splitter - it was attached to one of the 4 outputs.  I also saw an Ethernet cable attached to the DECA and assumed it needed to be connected to my router.  My HR44 is in the living room. Since my house is prewired, I had access to an ethernet port near my TV/DirecTV HR44.   I connected a Netgear switch so the HR44 and the TV could both use Ethernet.  The connection goes like this: Ethernet port behind TV connected to switch with 1st Ethernet cable>HR44 connected to switch with 2nd Ethernet cable>TV connected to switch with a 3rd Ethernet cable.  THIS is what caused the loop.  I did not realize that the HR44 does NOT need a DECA because it is built in.  A "loop" means there is multiple connections between 2 network switches or two ports on the same switch connected together (https://accedian.com/blog/identify-fix-network-switching-loop/).  Mine was connected to my network via the DECA (in the basement), AND it was connected to same network via the Ethernet cable that I plugged into my HR44 - connected to same network at 2 locations.  I searched high and low for an answer with my exact equipment but could not find anything specific.  Once I learned what the DECA was for, and that the HR44 did not need one, I decided to remove the DECA.

I resolved the loop issue by disconnecting the DACA from my router, unplugged the DACA power supply, and removed the coax cable that connected the DACA to the 4-way splitter, leaving ONLY the cable that leads to my living room connected to one of the splitter “output” ports - the cable coming from the satellite is connected to the splitter “input” port.  (I will be removing that splitter as soon as my DirecTV-approved coupling comes in because I don't need the splitter since I removed the DACA, and none of the other coax cables need to be connected because the DirecTV wireless media bridge handles the connection.) The loop issue was resolved and my equipment is working better. I hope this helps someone who can't find the answer on the net!

*I wanted my equipment to connect  via ethernet, NOT wireless - Ethernet faster than Wi-Fi

A clarification, your Mini Genies would be C41W, not just C41. The 'W' denotes the wireless version since those are two different models.

Other than that, glad you got your service up to par and hope the info helps others.

And it is DECA(DTV Ethernet over Coax Adapter) not DACA. You could have just removed the Ethernet cable from the HR44 and also eliminated the loop.

The DECA and power supply connected to the router  would provide internet to the HR44 same as an Ethernet cable.

Thank you for sharing all of your process with us! This is really helpful for other customers who may be looking to connect their equipment via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if anything else comes up and also if any questions arise. DIRECTV is always willing to help. Cesar, DIRECTV Community Specialist

I would only add that in a similar scenario with an HR24 instead of a Genie one would definitely want to use the DECA rather than the Ethernet port on the HR24. Connecting to the Ethernet port on the HR24 will disable the internal DECA making it so the HR24 cannot communicate with other receivers.
