Single line dish and two receivers

I recently accquired another receiver, i activated it and installed the chip etc. Several of the techs from the 800 of Directv said I needed a splitter, that did not work. Then another tech said i needed a multi-switch. I installed the switch, i have a signal in our second room, but now, both recievers routinely "search for signal", become really slow when changing channels and the picture becomes very pixelish. I called the 800 number again and now another tech is telling me i need to have two cables coming out of my dish to my switch. If I understand it correctly, if I have two ports on my dish to connect another cable.....would i need the switch at all? Do i need to change my dish out for 2 cable dish?
