Swap Receiver Tips
Any tips on swapping out an old receiver? I recently had a tech for our internet in our home and he commented on how old our receivers were. We have two - HD Receiver, Model H25-500. If I had to guess they are 7+ years old? I really don't want to be charged for the swap.

H25 receivers don’t need to be swapped. That tech has no idea what they are talking about. The only upgrade would be to a Genie HD DVR but then you would have to pay $13 more per month for Whole Home DVR($3) and DVR service($10).
If you don’t need a DVR or on-demand at all, your equipment is perfectly fine. If you decided to upgrade, a new contract would occur.

That tech was either clueless or talking out his rear. Model H25 is not old. It is the newest HD non-DVR, and the only non-Genie that is SWM-only.
Satellite tech doesn't advance as quickly as some other technologies. So 7+ years can still be current.
If those are your only two boxes, then you would only consider an upgrade if you wanted DVR capability.

Thank you @Juniper and @detuch254 - I appreciate the quick, helpful feedback. We will stick with what we have.

The H25 is an older receiver (the tag on bottom will show date of manufacture) but no need to replace if working ok. If you happen to have the Protection Plan you can upgrade at no cost, but will require new 2 year contract. A newer non-DVR option would be the H44 Genie Lite with a wired or wireless client mini Genie. Aside from the wireless option, it also works with the newer remote control in RF mode. It also can connect to your wifi which will allow you to order pay per view with your remote control.

I'm surprised the Genie Lite (H44) is still offered. That was kind of a crash and burn attempt. Confused too many people, 3rd parties offered saying DVR without DVR fee (which was a lie), and even if without the DVR upgrade kit it does not have Autotune (a big feature for many who stick with non-DVR capable models).
Being "older" doesn't make it bad. And it is the last dedicated non-DVR receiver where you are not forced into a Client only system. It allows customer flexibility, plus is more reliable as each box has their own dedicated tuner instead of all eggs in one basket.
You don't upgrade simply because box is older. Upgrade if you are getting new features you want and are not losing anything you really want to keep.
