System configuration options
Currently have a whole house Genie system with 2 mini’s and one genie HD DVR. i need more storage as the DVR is filling up daily (spouse is a news freak) i tried adding an external drive - but that was unsuccessful. i believe someone mentioned swapping out one of the mini’s with a new DVR
Can a new genie HD DVR or ”regular” HD DVR be installed instead of the mini?
i also want the ability to see all recordings in any of the 3 rooms
whats my best option? also i have a new Genie HD DVR that was shopped to me by mistàke that i tried for a year to get them to take back, but with no order for it - apparently they couldnt tale it back (so it is here)

If you have a regular Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) you can upgrade a Mini Genie Client to a regular HDDVR (last model made HR24). The regular HDDVR will have 2 tuners (instead of stealing 1 from the Genie) and 500GB recording space. No monthly cost difference between Client and HDDVR (or even HD non-DVR) as you are just paying for the authorized TV.
Whole Home DVR allows the recordings from every HDDVR in the home viewable by all other HD boxes, regardless if you have a Genie or not.
Regular HDDVRs also support external eSATA hard drives. However they have a hard cap support of 2TB. The Genie has no official hard cap, though was originally suggested up to 4TB, but people have used up to at least 12TB. Unknown why the external you mentioned in the other thread would not pair with your HR54.
As for the box you got without order, call DirecTV and ask about returning non-activated equipment. Since this is a very rare situation, when you get the voice prompt say "cancel" so that you get a retention agent who should be more experienced. Just in case here is the basic return process, but might not work as the box is not attached to your account.
