Trying to connect my VCR and DVD player

Hello. I am trying to connect my VCR to my HD TV which is also connected to the Genie. I also have a CD/DVD player that I want to hook up. Please help. Thank you very much.

Connect the VCR by the A/V or RCA cables and change the TV's input back and forth as needed

If the VCR is so old that it only connects by the coax/ANT input, then make sure the TV set (not DirecTV) is on channel 3 or 4 accordingly and then you just switch inputs as normal.

Are you trying to record shows from your DirecTV box to your VCR?  Or just view tapes and DVDs on the TV?

OK, then your DirecTV box does not enter into the equation. Your VCR/DVD player needs its own connection to your TV, just like your DirecTV box. Which connection you use depends on what's available on the VCR/DVD and your TV.
