Viewing Content on Genie DVR

We are getting ready to move into out new home and the only TV service available to us is DirecTV. I used to be a DTV customer for many years but finally cut them loose a few years ago because they raised the prices beyond what I was willing to pay. If we get DTV and a Genie HD DVR, is the only way to watch the content (Live or Recorded) on another TV is to get a Mini for the TV? Is there not a Fire Stick app that can be used to consume content we have access to with our service? I don't mind the Mini's but I do mind the perpetual, never ending cost of paying for them. Cable companies have gotten away from having to have one of their boxes to get the content you pay for...they have apps now for Roku and Fire Stick.

No, you can not watch any live or recorded content through a firestick because there is no Directv app for a firestick. There is no Directv app for any streaming device. The Directv app is only for phones and tablets. You need a genie client. You can use your Directv credentials for the various network apps on a firestick.

To watch content on another TV it needs a box, be that a Mini Genie Client, or a full HD or HDDVR receiver. Intro offer will usually include equipment for up to 4 TVs, which would be Genie and up to 3 Mini Genie Clients.

The $7 is not paying for the box itself, but for the authorized TV. Cost is same if you have a Client, full receiver, or even use a TV with a built in RVU client. Even leased or the old owned option makes no difference. You want service on the TV, then you pay for it.

Because you pay for each TV, DirecTV's app is not available on Firestick or any other media streaming device. Even the mobile devices (smart phone/tablet) block video if you try to cast/airplay/stream to a TV.

However, some individual channels have apps that can go on media streaming devices, which authorize by your current provider. So there is a way to get some content, just not all. DirecTV is designed for TV viewing on home through their satellites, with any internet connected options being secondary.

Cable companies have streaming apps because those same companies provide internet service through their cable. DirecTV is not an internet provider so is not setup for full streaming.

@Juniper thanks for the reply and the detail. Yeah, it is the ongoing $7 per month per TV that I have a problem with. I have had TiVo's for years and with a single TiVo receiver and a single CableCARD...I can watch the content I pay for on many other TVs in my house using TiVo mini's. Yes, I had to pay a one time price for each mini but it was a one time price and I have used them for years. DirecTV's service is fantastic but their pricing model is consumer gouging. If I do decide to go with them...it will only be for a couple of years until 5G rolls out...I think that will have a big impact on DTVs user base.

DirecTV's billing model, per their agreement with the networks, is you pay for each TV getting the service. It is more specifically a per TV service, not simply a per household service. So you want it on more TVs then you pay for them.

The good thing is that DirecTV has it at a flat rate per additional TV ($7). Some other providers charge $10 to $17 each based on what level the box is. So DirecTV keeps it as a mirroring fee.

Satellite, cable, and streaming providers have different infrastructures and agreements with the networks. As such they can have key differences in their billing models to support their setup.

@Juniper not sure who is charging $10 to $17 per TV but as I mentioned...with Cable, when using TiVo's/Mini's you only need a single CableCARD to cover up to 8 mini's. I know there is the upfront cost of the TiVo equipment but I have had mine for years and have long surpassed what I would have paid DTV for equal amount of TV coverage.

Same thing with Streaming providers. You have the upfront cost of the streaming devices (but they are cheap) but then most streaming providers allow at least 3 concurrent streams for the low monthly price you pay.

I have pretty much decided that I am going with YouTubeTV. Best bang for the buck for what we watch and 3 concurrent streams.

Dish for examples lists those kind of charges. It was their way of saying you don't pay for HD service, but that is because you put more cost to the equipment. On their Residential Agreement on the last couple of pages.

Streaming providers have little infrastructure, as they rely on your chosen internet provider to deliver the service. Their plans do state up to how many devices it includes. And the equipment is not provided by them, instead you get your chosen media streaming device (Firestick, Roku, etc.). So there are less things they have to maintain financially. But they have been seeing price increases, so wondering how long it will take to be more in the realm of traditional TV providers.

Hope the streaming works out for you. Each provider is geared towards different markets, with some overlap of course. Some of us don't live where there is good enough internet (if internet at all) to support streaming. With more and more devices using internet (TV, game consoles, computers, thermostats, refrigerators, etc.), we need a good baseline countrywide. I believe focus needs to be shifted from improving the already great areas to keeping them stable and improving the more rural areas, as well as where internet traffic travels from one provide to another. (And no repeat of that Sorcerer's Apprentice Syndrome that happened just over a year ago.)

if you want to use a firestick, you can use the station apps

but it sounds like you want a streaming service

oh and that comcast roku app is only free while its in beta

they plan to charge once its released

@mdram4x4 we will soon be off of Comcast as they don't service the area where our new home is. Their Roku app has been in Beta for years now. I don't currently use their app as I have TiVo's and Mini's.

At our home in Tennessee we had Spectrum. They too have their own app (it is free) and they tell you when you sign up that if you want, you can use their app on a streaming device in lieu of renting a receiver. Experience was no different than if you were using one of their receivers...except you could not record stuff.
