Watch out for super scammy DirecTV behavior after service call
I've seen a few other people post about this. I am currently enrolled in the the basic service plan for $8.99 / month. After having our service go out a few days ago, a tech came out to the house yesterday and replaced a bad splitter on the outside of the house. This morning, I get an email from DirecTV telling me that I my work order is now complete and I have agreed to their premier protection plan for $20.99 / month. I was never asked about the upgrade by the on-site tech or any service rep over the phone, and I did not agree to this. I logged into my account and switched the plan back to the base service plan.
Watch out for this and don't ignore the emails from DirecTV. If I had read the subject line to the email and simply deleted it on my phone without reading the whole email, I would have missed this super shady behavior. Really a shame that companies do this.

That’s odd that you were randomly upgraded. What was the email address that sent you this message? I just wanted to ensure that it is 100% legitimate and doesn’t involve a fake email or potential scammer who gained access to your account.

I thought the same thing and hence jumped onto my account by logging in directly at the DirecTV website to see that indeed my protection plan was now listed as the premier one.

@detuch254 it's not odd at ALL on site techs do it all the time and reps are highly pressured to upgrade the protection plan on every call at the risk of termination for not meeting required percentages(especially protection plan reps ) when I worked for the protection plan I hated upselling but I was required to do it on every call. As far as on site techs doing it, I would check the work order whenever a customer would call in about it and sure enough the upgrade option was checked off as if the customer agreed to it when signing the handheld device (that's actually what I checked) the system allows reps to see the "agreement "

Service calls are only $99 and have a 90 day warranty, DTV only charges $20 to ship replacement receiver and remotes are cheaper online.

Adding the protection plan has a 30 day no charge/no claim period. That helps against those on-site additions, IF the consumer checks their bill.
What I am trying to recall, does upgrading the level of the protection plan have that same 30 day grace period? @nabukl

The terms are the same. Coverage commences 30 days after purchase of the plan. If canceled within 30 days 100% is refunded.
Although coverage commences 30 days after purchase they will often waive the charges for service call if the customer purchases the basic protection plan at that time.
The premier plan can be a good deal for some people. For example I know somebody who left an Apple laptop on top of their car and it was demolished. They had the premier plan with the optional ADH coverage so they got a new laptop for $50 deductible. The premier plan will also pay for one new battery for a laptop in a year. You also covers home theater systems computer keyboards and mice and your router. But of course like anything else you have to evaluate the benefit versus the cost.
