Which Genie can I add to my account?

I have three DirecTV receivers and I want to add a fourth. I called them and was told I could add another of the kind I have or change all of them to Genie Mini for a lower price.

I don’t like Genie because it has only one DVR.

I had to think about it so I called back the next day.

This time I was told that the only option was Genie Mini.

Since I got conflicting stories, can anyone tell me which is correct.

The receivers I have are HR21-700 and two HR24-500.

Let me clear this up as so much misdirection is going on (some unintentional it seems).

The Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54) does work with your existing HDDVRs. You do NOT have to replace anything with a Mini Genie Client. Adding one more TV total will add $7 to your monthly bill. If you don't already have the service, this will also add $3 for Whole Home DVR which allows all 4 of your HDDVRs to see the recording lists of the others.

The Genie-2 (HS17) is the one to stay away from. This forbids anything but Clients on the account which is what would replace all your boxes, which would be a downgrade.

So adding a Genie as your 4th TV and keeping your existing HDDVRs is fine. Just make sure to read the order confirmation to verify they ordered what you wanted.

Regular HDDVRs (latest model HR24) are becoming harder to get. They are non-returnable as they don't exclusively use the newer setup. You may still be able to upgrade to one, but this is a 2 tuner, 500GB HDDVR compared to the 5 tuner, 1TB of the Genie.

Whether you go with a regular HDDVR or Genie for the 4th TV, it will add a 24 month service agreement. Just absolutely do not get the Genie-2 (HS17) as that is the problem one.

Thank you. Can the HR24 and Genie Mini use the same dish. I have read conflicting things on this.

Yes they can use the same dish.

Mini Genie Clients must be on the same physical network (cabling/dish) as the Genie as they are extension of it and cannot work without it.

Dedicated receivers, such as the HR24, can be on the same or different dish. This gives flexibility for those with a detached garage, workshop etc. that is too far to just run a cable and needs a separate dish.

Only extremely old SD-only boxes (except D12 and special HD-in-hiding R22) couldn't be on the same dish/cabling.

I just called them and they can do what you said. They are going to add an HR55 Genie receiver. Thank you very much for your help!

Getting an HR54 Genie as your 4th box is great. As it has the most tuners and recording space, you may wish to put it on the TV that gets used the most. The HR21 has a bit of a smaller drive compared to the HR24s.

With 3 regular HDDVRs and a Genie you are at 11 tuners total which is plenty to go around.

Just double check the order confirmation that is shows Genie not Genie-2, it is an additional TV not a replacement, and that there are no Mini Genie Clients on the order.

I want to accept Juniper's reply as a solution but I don't see a way to do that.

DTV has made those models non returnable so they may be out of them, the HR24 is the last HDDVR made. DTV is now installing only the HS17 Genie2 and you will lose them as the account will only allow minis.

It is unknown if DTV has fixed the problem with their RC1 account system that wouldn't allow third party leased receivers to be activated.
