White flicker during hockey broadcasts

I got HDTV about 3 weeks ago.    I now get a flicker on the screen every few seconds during hockey games.    It is happening on my HD Plasma Panasonic TV and my standard definition TV.    I didn't notice this before my HD hookup.     When watching this frame by frame on the DVR, the whole screen is nearly whited out like a huge flash went off.    I had a directv tech at the house earlier this week and the receivers are fine.   He then checked and he has the same thing happening on his televisions.    This is happening on MSG (638), Versus (603) and the Hockey Channel (215).      I turned off the automatic brightness control and this did not help.    I have tried watching in various modes such as vivid, cinema, standard, game, etc with no change.

Any ideas?

It actually might be a flash going off.  I've seen this on basketball games, too.  Bright flashes from the stands can overwhelm the TV cameras at those games, causing this effect.  I doubt it's your equipment.

The professional photographers have flash that is synced together; as litzdog posted, we've seen it on basketball games from time to time. If the flash is in a particular position relative to the TV cameras, you get this issue.

Thanks for the replies.    If this is photographer flashes, why don't viewers see this on Time Warner or DIsh?

Different digital video encoders.   But I see the same thing when viewing sports broadcasts on my local HD stations using off-air reception instead of DirecTV, so I think it's a rather common issue.
