Why can’t I retrieve previous recordings once I switch DTV genies
This is the 2nd time I’ve had to replace my genie due to it quitting unexpectedly. Why doesn’t DTV create a way to transfer previous recordings as well as the programs that are set to record?? Surely this should be an easy fix with today’s technology. It’s very frustrating to keep losing everything, especially when it’s DTV’s equipment that’s failing, and not because I chose to switch genies.

I agree, DIRECTV should definitely make a way to transfer recordings from a previous DVR to the respective replacement/upgrade receiver. For a long time, recordings have been encrypted to the Receiver ID/access card that recorded it. Whether this is a security precaution or something else, no one here would know being we are all customers.

Recordings are encrypted to the exact box. This has been the way since the first DVR, long before the Genie. This prevents unauthorized transfer of content that cuts into content/channel owners and their physical/digital media sales.
Been requested every so often, but no sign of this changing. They even stopped supporting external hard drives (for increased storage) by removing the eSATA port on the newest boxes.

Been this way for 30 years doubt DTV will change it.

The first DVR for DIRECTV must have been the UltimateTV which was made back in 2000 so of course this restriction has occurred for quite some time. It likely won’t be changed, although many here (including me) have been yearning for it forever.

DTV used TiVo's when they first started in 1994 until Rupert Murdoch bought Tivo and DTV's CEO at the time didn't like him and severed the agreement, DTV then had to make their own DVR.
