Wired to wireless genie mini

I have a Genie 2 with two C61-700 genie minis operating in the wired mode. Is it possible to switch one of the minis to the wireless mode?

Nope, as there is no wireless mode, you have to replace a wired mini with a wireless one, there are two models the C41W or the C61W both are $99 unless you have a free upgrade available.

I had just figured that out, and thanks for the verification. I also see in the forums where wireless clients can't do 4k. Is that still the case?

Correct the only 4K model is C61K and requires tech install to make sure it works as not all 4K TVs are compatible. As there are only a couple channels in 4K (plus a few PPVs), not a huge upgrade. Normally I would suggest having an HDDVR instead for more capability with no difference in monthly cost, but you have the Genie-2 server tower that forbids anything but Clients being on the account.

The only wireless models are C41W and the new C61W. Since you have a Genie-2 (HS17) with the wireless video bridge (WVB) built in, then theoretically an upgrade to one could be drop shipped. Provided the location would be within signal range. If an external WVB is needed, that is a wireless setup fee for the owned accessory of $99.

Thanks! We're not using 4k now, just curious what the status was. We're due an upgrade, so we'll pursue that route. Thanks!

Sorry you are stuck with the Genie-2 restrictive system. If you do decide to go the 4K route, here is the base info.

HR54 Genie on non 4K tv (Can connect to a 4K tv, but will not provide the 4K feed to it).

C61K Mini Genie Client (wired only at this time) on 4K tv.

Remember Client has no tuner of its own, uses 1 from the Genie.

4K tv must support HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0, and 60 FPS

DirecTV Installation, 4K tv must be there

Package Select or above as of 12/15/2016 (used to be only Ultimate or Premier). So only the Family package will not get 4K service at all.

At this time there are only a couple channels in 4K (plus a few PPVs)

Even if you have multiple C61K or RVU clients, only one tv can be using a 4K channel at a time.

The Genie-2 (HS17) tower can be used instead of the HR54, but is not suggested per built-in limitations and not all bugs squashed. The one benefit is that it can support two 4K streams, so 2 TVs at a time can use a 4K channel.

So,  if I buy from Amazon a Wireless Video Bridge, a splitter,  and a C41W,  is this a DIY installation using my HR 54 receiver?

@Wizwagons

You will pay $99 for the owned WVB and the one-time lease cost for the C41W and get a 24 month agreement upon activation. No Genie/Mini Genie is owned, they are 'lease' only (means 24 month agreement and you return to DirecTV upon deactivating it).

In theory you could go that route to self-install. Be aware that DirecTV last year was having issues in the new account system activating boxes from their authorized retailers. Going this way means you can select model number, so could get the C61W. Ordering through DirecTV itself you might get a C41W if any are left in stock.

The alternative is through DirecTV getting an HDDVR. Tech would wire it in (as the WVB would have been wired anyway). Get more capability and reliability this way.
