C71KW-200 stuck at Connecting to the Network (and a spinning AT&T logo)
Hey all,
I have this Osprey box that I got from AT&T and I thought I can let my kid watch TV. Plugged it in, then it wasn't taking my l/p. So I tried Ethernet - still no dice. I unplugged/replugged it 7 quick times, now when I power it on, it goes: AT&T Logo -> AT&T Logo with "System Updating: This could take a few minutes", it flashes quickly, like 2 seconds maybe -> AT&T spinning Logo with "Connecting to the Network" below, at about 1/6 of the way through the progress bar. It is connected via Ethernet (verified to work). I got this box straight through AT&T as a beta participant and I was told I could keep it. I see it on my account but without a serial number (weird?). I spent about 1 hour on the chat with a rep but it led me nowhere. I've been a customer since day 1 (8 years) and I got an AppleTV to prove it.
Questions:
1. Is it just a brick? Anything else I can try?
2. I heard there is a way to force it to "a Google TV type of reset". I can't make mine do it. Is there anything else I can try?
I'd rather avoid buying another box right now, due to financial reasons.

Hi there. We're sorry to hear you're having issues with your device. Please follow these steps to perform a hard reset or reset it to factory settings:
Press and hold the red reset button on the side of the device for 20 seconds.
After restarting, wait for your device to reboot.
Repeat if necessary.

How long ago did you get that Osprey box? If it was from an early beta program, it can likely not be activated anymore.

During a prior rebrand from AT&T TV to DIRECTV STREAM, they changed the address for updates. Sounds like the box wasn't connected to get the updated info before the transition happened. Unfortunately there is no way to update the Osprey/Gemini manually to the new update address which makes it a brick.
You could keep an eye out for a used one (such as from eBay) to save on cost. Just make sure reputable seller and good return policy just in case it wasn't updated like yours.

Thank you! Is there a way to either spoof the DNS (I haven't checked the DNS queries the box makes) to point it to a working repository or: is there a way to make this repository with some files to have to jumpstarted, or: I heard you can make the box reset even one level below (into the Google TV OS level), and then "it takes". I am sure there is a tribal knowledge how to do that. Heck, I am willing to open the box and take a look at the storage inside and flash it accordingly.

I've not seen anyone be able to "spoof" these old boxes.

The issue is the box is trying to go to the old update address. Unfortunately it does not have a redirect to the new address.
Currently there is no way to manually upload the new info into the old box. So being disconnected for too long means it missed the update and is now a brick.
