Replacing 2015 Samsung TV RVU Client

Current equipment setup: Genie HR54, 2015 Samsung RVU TV Client, and C41 Client. Am replacing my older Samsung TV with a new LG TV which means replacing current Samsung RVU TV Client. Have following questions:

  1. I started DIRECTV service in 2015. At that time, Samsung TV was hooked up as a RVU TV Client, and not with a Mini-Genie box. That was ok, but will this change (no RVU Client) be considered a “replacement” of equipment?
  2. Mini-Genie boxes like C41, C61 or C61K ok to use with new set up?
  3. Also looked at replacing RVU TV Client with HD DVR but am unclear if this is an “upgrade” and I would be charged an additional one-time fee for the HD DVR? Not clear as to how you hook up the HD DVR to my Whole-Home network? Is it the same as pairing a Mini-Genie Client?

Thank you.

No, you will have to lease a new mini and unless you have an upgrade coming it will be $99. DTV has run out of refurbished HR24s that haven't been made for years which is the last model of DVR made so they only have HR54 Genies but you already have a Genie and only one is allowed on the account.

Thanks for the input. I don’t understand why replacing a RVU Client with another Client is an "upgrade” and not a replacement. I also don’t know what it means “to have an upgrade coming”? Does 7+ years of having DIRECTV service and paying my bills on time qualify me in this special club of having an upgrade coming? If a Mini-Genie had been installed to begin with, I would not be asking the question of replacement.

1. A Mini Genie Client would be an "upgrade". Comes with a 24-month service agreement. If it has been more than 2 years since your last upgrade, it should be free on the equipment. Otherwise the one-time lease cost of a Mini Genie (regarldes of model) is $99.

2. You get next one on the shelf essentially, no choosing of specific model. Though if you do a 4K upgrade, then you would get the C61K as that is the only 4K model to date (hence the 'K' in the model number).

3. Replacing RVU with Mini Genie Client, HDDVR, or even HD non-DVR is an upgrade. There is no difference in monthly cost as you already have the needed receiver services and are not changing number of TVs. Personally I would suggest an HDDVR to get 2 tuners and 500GB recording space, plus not relying on the Genie to work, but they haven't been made in years (last model HR24) and might be out of stock. Alternatively you can get an HR24 through a authorized 3rd party (Solid Signal, etc.), but that would be at the one-time lease cost of $199 (or possibly a bit more now as I've heard cost going up as supply dwindles but demand might be going up).

As has been said, you would probably qualify for a no charge upgrade but it would require a new 2 year commitment. A possible alternative would be to purchase a client off of eBay. Genie clients do not need to be activated in the DirecTV system if they are replacing another client. The Genie just cares about how many clients are active on your account. So you would be able to replace the rvu with another client without having DirecTV have to activate it. (Genie 2s will only work with the specific clients active on the account.)

Good point. As long as the RVU TV stays active as a client on the account, just unpair it and have another Genie mini paired. However, I’m not sure if this would work in the case that the Genie mini was active on another account.

A few Forum experts have referenced the 24-month service agreement due to equipment upgrade. I noted under DIRECTV’s most recent Equipment Lease Agreement the following terms:

TERM OF COMMITMENT

What is the term of my Programming Commitment? You agree to continuously maintain the minimum level of programming (as described above) with us as follows:

12 months for existing customers who elect to have new or upgraded Leased Equipment shipped to them.

24 months for all new customers, existing customers, and Movers Customers who upgrade to Leased Equipment that involves professional installation.

Since I am an existing customer who wants to upgrade Leased Equipment (Mini-Genie) and have the Mini-Genie shipped to me, would I not fall under the 12-month service agreement instead of 24? I wanted to clarify as I’m probably missing something.

Thank you

You may be correct but it would be best to call customer service and have them confirm the length of service agreement required.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your knowledge with our community. You are correct, DIRECTV can upgrade the device. However, keep in mind the 2-year commitment information will depend on the service the customer has. I recommend you to check on this link for further information: https://www.directv.com/support/satellite/article/KM1040953/
