New U-verse Deal

So funny story...  This weekend (Saturday to be exact) I get a call from AT&T and they say that U-Verse telephone and internet are available in my area now and would I like to sign up?  Yea, I say.  So they go through all the stuff and sign me up.  I currently have home phone and internet with AT&T.  Here's the offer presented over the phone:  6Mb/s internet, unlimited calling, $44.95 for the first year, $81 after that.  They also tell me all modem and install fees will be waived. Sweet, right?

So yesterday I did some poking around online and see that for the same price ($44.95/mo for a year) I can get 12Mb/s internet and 200 minutes on the phone.  That sounds even better to me so I call up and ask to switch my order.  The agent cancels my original order and then can't get the free modem and install back.  Neither he nor anyone else could get me back to the group that sold me the original offer.  Neither could the online support team. 

So actually, not really a funny story.  It is a horrible story where no one takes any type of personal responsibility for customer issues.

Anybody got any ideas on how to fix all this?
