Purchase of AT&T Uverse causes a hard credit check by Direct TV even if you don't purchase Direct TV
I just checked my credit report and I see that I've got two new credit checks against my account. One is AT&T and the other is Direct TV. I ordered Uverse. I did not order Direct TV. I called customer service to have the Direct TV credit check removed as I did not authorize it. Customer Service said they can't do that because Direct TV is now part of AT&T and it's just a part of the process. I told them I don't care if you've got 20 subsidiaries. If I buy something from you, you only have the right to run one credit check.......and, if AT&T owns Direct TV and I had authorized Direct TV to run a Credit check (Which I didn't), why can't AT&T share the credit check within their own corporation. I want this Credit check removed from my credit report, and I will not stop until it's removed. This is step one, and AT&T is not going to like any steps past this one.

The two companies are still operating by and large as separate business units and do not look at your credit history across the two companies and have different standards for creditworthiness.
It's not so much growing pain as an expectation of integration that is not there.

What is not legal? Two divisions of a major holding company operating as independant entities? I can assure you that's not only legal but also very common.

I've had U-Verse internet for 7 years. I moved to a location that didn't have U-Verse, so I was stuck with AT&T DSL. When AT&T finally put U-Verse in my new area they ran a credit check for the upgrade. My DSL bill after the first year was about to be $49/mo. Now I have a U-Verse bill for $50/mo. What was the risk?
AT&T isn't the only company that does unecessary credit checks but, I've been with them since 2009... and my reward is to be treated as a nobody? They should have asked me before running a hard inquiry. I'm trying to purchase my first home. The last thing I wanted was to pay AT&T to lower my credit score.

The best way to protect yourself against this practice is to place a credit freeze on your credit files with the three major credit bureaus. The credit freeze is free and can only be released by you. You can grant access to your credit file to specific vendors. So if you only want AT&T to run your credit report, you only grant access to AT&T. If, AT&T refuses to remove the fraudulent credit check from DirectTV, please reach out to your Congressional representative, file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, notify the credit bureau that this was a fraudulent access of your credit report. If enough people report this practice to the credit bureaus, AT&T and DirectTV will be suspended by the credit bureaus. It can and does happen!
