When they upgraded the last time, the SD channels are at the volume the HD channels used to be, 18-20.  The HD channels for me now are 12-14, they raised the audio level of all the HD channels.

Now if on HD and go to SD, it's way too low, have to raise it to 18-20.  Conversely, if on regular SD volume and switch to HD it blasts you out.   We have no idea the reason for this, but glad I'm an HD snob and rarely or ever fall into that. Smiley Very Happy

Too low?  Too loud?

I don't see a difference in either of those two or any other channel...of course I was just hearing Tom (of Tom & Jerry fame) yelling but still.... Cat Tongue

Don't mess with old people.  The older we get, the less "Life in Prison" is a deterrent.

I am having the same problems with my channels.  The HD channels are louder than the regular channels.  I didn't see a solution to the problem.

The "accepted solution" assigned to @mibrnsurg's post does not mean it's solved per se, @smile7076.  What that means sometimes is that is the best answer. Someone can look at the solution and see what is going on - i.e., sometime during the last update, HD channels are now louder than SD.  I do not like the term "Accepted Solution" because of this - "Best Answer" works better, IMO.

Thank you for clarifying this for me.  I assumed it meant that it was solved.  It is good to know that it means "best answer."

It is the solution to the OP's question, why is the volume level different between SD and HD channels.

It tells why it is different. 😉

Well, I'm putting myself in others shoes.  To the OP, "solved" would mean the HD and SD channels now have equal volume levels.  He's not the only one to thinks like that.....  "Solution,"  "Best Answer," "Yup it makes sense," all fit, lol.

The problem is that Uverse is setting the "Dialog Level" or "Dialnorm" parameter wrong in the digital audio stream on the SD channels.  Some receivers use that Dolby metadata parameter the way it was intended -- to automatically adjust the relative volume between channels.  When Uverse sets that parameter incorrectly in the digital output to the receiver, the receiver is compensating incorrectly and screws up the audio level completely.  The Uverse decoder box apparently ignores that parameter and the analog output from the STB for those channels seems to be OK.  The only workaround is to use the analog outputs from the STB.  The real fix is for Uverse to set up their encoding equipment correctly and use a reasonable dialnorm setting for all channels.
