Android TV App Performance Issues

I've been waiting years for the app to be supported on Android TV, but unfortunately the performance is terrible on my Sony Bravia 4K TV (2016).  Half the screen is pixelated all the time, especially fast moving sequences like sports.  I am using a wired ethernet connection and confirmed I am getting 100 Mbps up and down, so I don't think it's a bandwidth issue.

Could it be that my TV is too old?  I have a Fire TV Cube (1st Gen, 2018).  The app is completely unusable on there because the hardware is so dated.  Is that what is happening here?  Anyone else experiencing this on Android TV?

It is likely underpowered for DIRECTV STREAM. Your best bet is using a fire stick, Roku, Apple TV, or even the DIRECTV stream osprey box itself which has a handy remote and very fast speeds/performance.

Hello @dp44, we always want our customers to have an optimal and functioning service

Check here to check the compatible devices with the DIRECTV STREAM services. If your equipment is compatible, please try restarting your device and make sure it is connected to the Internet. Also, please confirm that your Android devices have the most recent software update.

The DIRECTV STREAM App is constantly updating in order to provide with a better virtual experience, for this reason, devices that have been too long in the market will begin to outdated and thus will start experiencing issues with the app until it becomes incompatible. If the issue persist, we recommend you to use the Osprey Box which will always be compatible with our app and up to date.

Let us know how it goes.

Sorry, I am just getting back to this.  I tried all of your suggestions and the issue persists.  I'm guessing my 2016 TV has been "too long in the market" as you said.  Thanks anyway.

I have the same issues with choppy sports playback on my 2019 shield pro and even my fire stick 4k max. I’m on gigabit fiber with at&t so it’s not a bandwidth issue. I’ve reported it several times since the app was released in October but the updates haven’t resolved anything.

You can get a refurbished Dtv Stream box from Directv for 49.99---with one year warranty. Best device by far. No more headaches lol

Yes. Purchase a slow device with less RAM and older processor than my Shield or OLED Sony TVs to make a premium service work the way that it should. Hilarious 😀

@ronharri55

no one here ever asked for your personal preference. It’s a known fact, the directv stream boxes work very adequately for the service.

Thanks for the advice.  I was using a 1st gen Fire TV Cube, but as I said in my original post, it is unusable with directv stream.  I guess 2018 hardware is old at this point.  Apple's hardware is far superior, but I think the Apple TV remote is clunky to use with directv stream (among other things, you have to use the back button to get to the menus).  The latest gen 3 Fire TV Cube has it's own issues

(Edited per community guidelines)

So now I am onto a Roku Ultra device.  I'm only a few days in but so far so good.

Bought a brand new TCL Google TV as DirecTV claims that the Android system is compatible with their App. Couldn't be further from the truth. Practically inoperable. 30 second lag times to pull up the guide and use DVR functions. Constantly freezes. I've tried every suggestion I can find to solve the issue and it still operates the same. DirecTV needs to find a solution to this issue with the Android OS. I have no problem on my Roku TV.

Not surprised at all. It's relatively new, so expect bugs. Based on history with the service, I would expect (if any) a slow integration. Of course, I would always recommend using an external streaming device.

Having used Roku Ultra for a couple months now, I think it's the best in terms of performance, remote, and DirecTV features. Yes, the app is different on different platforms!  The guide on Roku will scroll to the A channels after scrolling down to Z.  The Fire TV guide stops at Z and you have to go back to the top to get A channels.  Why?????

So my order of preference would be Roku, Apple TV, Samsung TV, Fire TV.
