Can I take my home receiver/DV in my RV?

We are getting a directv satellite antenna installed on our new RV.  A friend says he just takes his home receiver with him.  Can we take ours? It's also a DVR so that could interfere with recordings, couldn't it?

Howdy Justice:

Thanks for the reply.

The only two boxes we have in the house are two HR24-200 DVR's.

Was sort of wondering if I could drag one to the RV, and use the
roof-mounted 18" round dish to get the regular channels that are on 101?
(That's all we really need or use.)

Since our old R10 receiver was not obtained from DTV, I suspect that
they will not honor a swap...

Cheers.

It is Juniper, not Justice. 🙂

HR24s are just fine. Not simply MPEG-4, but the most recent regular HDDVR made to date. They work with both the old setup and new, though you have to reset them for the RV. Problem is that the RV dish is now becoming obsolete. Over the coming months, more and more of the MPEG-2 feeds are removed until they are all gone.

Doesn't matter if R10 was ordered through DirecTV or you got it through a authorized retailer. The box is proprietary to DirecTV service. You should still be able to get a complimentary swap on the box itself, even though DirecTV will not update the RV. Since you already have HDDVRs, the MPEG swap is normally a Genie (HR44 or HR54). This is for the home by tech install. End result would expect to be the Genie and your two existing HDDVRs. One of your HR24s is what you would be using in the RV going forward. The Genie is a 5 tuner with 1TB recording space compared to the 2 tuner and 500GB of a HR24, so a more capable HDDVR. If you don't already have it, this would add Whole Home DVR service which is just $3. Allows each HDDVR to see the recordings of the others. The one you take from home will not see the others while in the RV as not physically connected. And of course assuming you have it, the $5 TiVO service goes away.

So call DirecTV and get the complimentary swap of that R10. Through a 3rd party (Wingard, Solid Signal, etc.) see about getting a slimline SWM dish to use on a sled/tripod mount for the RV. Much cheaper than the Winegard Trav'ler that auto aims. As a caution, do not let them replace either of your HR24s as those work just fine with the regular Genie line.

Sorry for the oversight with your name--my aging eyeballs are not as
sharp as they used to be.

Thanks so much for the newsy and detailed response. You and  I are, I
believe, on the same page of the technical aspects. (After spending more
than 5 hours on the web site yesterday, I certainly learned a lot. But I
also noted that there seems to be a divided camp among the experts as to
whether the round 18" dish would work or not. Yes, I am going to give it
a try and see how far I get.

Thanks.

Some say there will be some programs left on the 101 sat, IMHO that sat has been in orbit for 20 odd years and is at or near its end of life, others say no either way it will be replaced with a 4K bird.

Yes, there will be some channels left on 101ºW. But nobody knows what those will be. So your favorite channels might not be there.

All that Directv has said is that there will be a "selection of popular channels" on 101. I would have expected Winegard to know more but they don't seem to. Certainly Directv has moved one of its newer satellites to cover the 101 slot.

DirecTV Slimline dish with Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM) LNB and SWM Power Inserter on a tripod.

Or Winegard Trav'ler with SWM LNB and SWM Power Inserter.

Howdy Juniper:

Sorry for the delay, but I lost the thread and couldn't find it right away.

I think I am slowly getting the drift of the new technology.

If I use one of my HR24-200 DVRs as the receiver, then I could use either a Slimline 3LNB dish, either without SWM or with SWM. Since I have the HR-24, I would not need a Power Inserter in either case.

A Slimline 3 LNB dish (non SWM) will have four outputs on the LNB, and can thus be connected to two receivers with inputs to both tuners (running four cables), but it also requires B-Band Converters (or something like that) on each feed before it gets to to the receivers.

A Slimline SWM 3 LNB dish will have only  one output on the LNB, and a downstream splitter is used to send the signal to the various receiver(s), and no B-Band Converters are required.

Please correct me if I have screwed up someplace ...

Thanks for taking the time to slowly get me a bit more knowledgeable about the newer technology.

I appreciate your patience, knowledge and perseverance.

You will need a 21v power inserter with a SWM LNB as the HR24 doesn't supply 21V only 13v or 18v.
