Dispute with TEGNA

Good morning. I'm writing to just say that it is ridiculous this "back and forth" for more revenue. Realize that many people don't have the funds to keep paying price hikes because your company wants more money. That's just greed. Because of this, we can't watch our local channels. FIGURE IT OUT AND STOP PRICE GAUGING.

I wouldn't expect this negotiation to take excessively long. But depending where you are at in the cycle it might not be finished before the current one ends. It is up to each how long they can survive without one or two specific local channels.

Be aware of your cycle dates (not the day you paid). Like other providers they do not prorate the bill, so even if you cancel on day 1 of the cycle (which is before autopay goes through, or when bill is due if on manual payments), you still pay for the entire cycle.

And remember, it is DirecTV not Direct TV. Something to watch out for so you don't get caught by scams out there.

People are commenting to reach out to Tegna, but Tegna doesn’t care. The only option is to pay what they want and move on.  Or, for those that don’t want to pay as much, come up with another way to watch local channels. Eventually, State or Feds may get involved and Tegna will have to deal with them at that time. But as a DTV customer today, I am willing to pay more to watch local channels. Or maybe ATT should eat the cost to better compete. ATT also makes a ton of money and they need to understand that I don’t care about their problems with Tegna. When I turn on my TV to watch local channels, I want to see the local channels. If not, I will go to a service that offers it. I am out of patience with this (Edited per community guidelines).

AT&T sold off 30% of DTV and no longer handles the day to day operations.  So will you move again when your new provider has the same problem? The FCC created this and hasn't done anything about it for years, doubt they will now.

The cheapest way to watch your local stations is the "old fashioned" way .... an off-air antenna. No fees!  So why to cable & satellite providers have to pay more and more for FREE stations???

I did suggest to one individual because they specifically were yelling at Tegna but to the DirecTV forum. So recommending they provide feedback in the correct spot.

As I went to pay TV because locals weren't enough. That means I do NOT want to pay more for what I can get free. I would be happy if they went back to locals being optional and then I could choose to save money by opting out of them.

You may not care about any problems AT&T/DirecTV has with Tegna (or any other local owner), but those do affect us as customers just like any other business. And switching providers doesn't protect you as they all have to deal with this at one time or another with different channel owners. Certainly go where it works best for you, just something to be aware of.

I just don’t get it.  We have su(Edited per community guidelines)cribed to direct tv to get the Denver (local) channels

there is no other option for us up here in the mountains (Clark, Co - 20 miles north of Steamboat Springs) OTA is NO T an option

what really bothers us is that we are required to get NBC programming from channel 9  … we cannot su(Edited per community guidelines)cribe to any feed because we are considered “local” including the NBC app via roku

I think the FCC needs to modernize its policies to read OTA or Streaming needs to be available for every zip code classified as “local”

this is just monopolizing (Edited per community guidelines), which is why the OTA regs exist in the first place

Ps  ... ww are so relieved that the Christmas Eve bronco game is going to be on ABC

anyone else think the FCC should get involved?

Per the local channel owner's successful lobbying, DirecTV is not able to just provide you those channels (or an out-of-market equivalent) just because you cannot receive the OTA broadcast. That is how the Federal regulations are setup with the FCC (and other appropriate entities) already involved.

As such, DirecTV has no way to force Tegna (or any other local affiliate owner in this type of situation), to provide them those channels. Until Tegna gives permission, they are gone. So DirecTV is left with either give into their demands to get the channels back quicker but add that much more to the next price adjustment, or continue negotiating to minimize anything that affects cost.

In the end local channels are not something we are entitled to. It is still entertainment so is not considered a necessity.

Hmmm  ... I get we are not entitled to the local channels  ... but I cannot subscribe to any other NBC provider except channel 9 in Denver  ... I even subscribed to the NBC channel via Roku and was denied access since my zip code is considered “local” to Denver

something really wrong with that  ... as far as I’m concerned Tegna should be required, by the FCC to steam to area codes where OTA is not an option but required by this definition of local

if that means they pay directtv to handle their streaming or make it available by some other means perfect  ... i am a little upset that most people think OTA is an option for us  ... including the tvpromise offer to buy us an antenna

if we cannot get NBC programming from the Denver owned affiliate let us subscribe to a diff market!

Per those Federal regulations you may only get locals that are in your Designated Market Area (DMA). That is why you cannot get locals from another area because the locals will not allow it.

Regulations that allowed a waiver or other way to get out-of-market locals, especially when OTA is not an option, are no longer available. A big loss was the locals lobbied to have the Stelar act expire a few years ago.

Satellite TV is restricted to following the DMA rules. That is why you are not allowed to subscribe to a different market. Unless those DMA lines change or you move, then you will have to wait for negotiations to complete.

As another customer I certainly do not like this. Unfortunately local affiliate owners (Tegna, Mission, Nexstar, etc.) won out and have the industry set in their favor.

To be clear, I would like a better solution. But unless there is a huge shift in lobbying power or a change in the industry as a whole, we as customers are stuck within these rules and regulations.

I stand with all the outraged customers who are deprived of our favorite programming. Ours is NBC 12 in Phoenix. I see this as a (Edited per community guidelines) contest between two giants. Meanwhile all of us who pay the bills every month get punished! I say “put your big boy/girl pants on” and settle this contest!

Tegna is a greedy company that needs to be punished for their unfeeling methods of extorting more money from Direct TV. My 92 year old mother's few joys are Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.  Tegna has made record profits and do no work for it. The cable companies do all the work and Tegna reaps the benefits. Stop being (Edited per community guidelines) and sign the contract.

Directv is a dying platform. This is a LOCAL station, FFS!!! Why has it been weeks of no progress? I've missed Philly vs. Dallas and other big NFL matchups over this dispute. And now we're heading into college bowl game time. I refuse to revert back to an antenna. It's 2023, not 1983. Directv is trying to scrap every penny they can as their customer base continues to head for the exits. I'm going 100% streaming after this. I've already dropped down to the most basic package they offer for the sake of local channels and other non-"premium" content. This is ridiculous. DO BETTER DIRECTV!!!!

@Trekappa

Doesn't matter it is a local station. Tegna (the station owner) can still hold out for however many days or weeks they want to raise the price.

Just because it is not 1983 doesn't mean antenna has gone away. That has updated to the digital channels and even added additional sub-channels. No matter what TV provider you have it is a VALID OPTION to protect yourself against negotiations. All of the pay TV providers go through this situation no matter the platform. If you refuse to use a option that works, then you really don't care about the channel as much as you claim.

DirecTV is trying to minimize cost. Not saying that they are doing it purely for our benefit, but the bottom line is when a business has their operating costs go up then they have to raise the price they charge.

So say it right and say DO BETTER TEGNA!!!! They are the ones raising costs that cause this snowball effect. You can thank your precious local owner for that.
