Is there a way to stop commercials from running when pausing?

I can no longer pause and examine something because the paused picture changes to ATT programming commercials before there is time. And switching back loses the paused page as that always loses 2 or 3 frames. Try reading a longer Chuck Lorrie vanity card after one of his shows, or seeing all the sight gags in shows like The Simpsons. This is ruining DirecTV for me! EXTREMELY ANNOYING!

the only way is to disconnect your receiver from the internet

Thanks so much! This workaround has been tried and works. I would prefer a switch but almost never see one from anyone on a 'new & improved' system that really usually isn't improved at all for me.

Why would any provider give you a switch to turn off an ad?

Now if I could find one for my Samsung TV. It shows the "SmartHub" for 60 seconds, yes, I timed it, anytime you go into settings and back out.

All Samsung had for me was to reset the SmartHub but this only works until you turn off the TV and it resets. It also wipes all the apps that were there off the SmartHub so streaming via the TV is out. That part doesn't bother me as anyone who streams from a smart TV must have never streamed from a dedicated device like a Roku etc.. But even finding a TV that's not smart is near impossible. Smart does not mean better!

"Why would any provider give you a switch to turn off an ad?"

I'm sure ATT and some customers consider it a 'Feature' to help clients find content. But no one I know of ever bothers when changing the basic functioning of operating interfaces to give a switch for those to whom it is a downgrade. SMH

I believe what you're seeing is something AT&T tried for about a week, and now it's no more.

For me it started about a week ago, when you'd pause something about 30 seconds to 1 minute later some AD would show on the screen. I would press the INFO button to remove the AD as per the instructions to press any button, then my paused video would be advanced a few seconds. Ya, very annoying.

My DVR is not doing this anymore. It's interesting they can make these changes on-the-fly without receiver updates. My last firmware update was December of last year. So it's obvious they can make whatever change they want to your DVR in real-time.

EDIT: Interesting coincidence, their receivers were getting AD popups after 30 seconds or so of pause, and right around when that tomfoolery behavior stopped, numerous people are receiving "Error 927" while trying to watch Video On Demand programming. Someone mentioned a possible AD server access problem for the 927 error. Because with Video On Demand recordings, see no ADs, then see no videos. Has someone's AD network been hacked?

If the DirecTV setup is disconnected from internet (resetting network defaults, unplugging Ethernet or CCK-W if not built-in WiFi used) but still showing programming adds during pause, then it is still acting like it is connected.

In that case I would unplug power from the HDDVR/Genie that is used to connect to internet for at least a minute. This normally clears anything stuck in residual memory. It may dump the guide info, but that is back within 24 hours. After this full power cycle, I would reset network defaults one more time to be safe. This should make sure it is not holding on to your router's info when it should be cleared from it.
