Loss of Extended Networks Service due to recent law change -

We are one of over 1 million full time RVers that live and work on the road. Due to Congress changing a bill that affects the Extended Network Services package that DIRECTV was able to provide, we will lose this service on 1 June 2020. DIRECTV has informed us that we can still have our service address local channels as long as we are in the service address location - this is fine if we lived in a sticks and bricks home but, we live in an RV in order to move on a regular basis. DIRECTV Movers states that we can change our service area once per year with no charge which will allow us local channels in another location. We move 4 to 6 times per year depending on the job.....and they could not tell us the charge for moving more than once.

Anyway - my main question is that DISH is stating that they have a new technology for people in my situation. You can relocate your RV, put up your dish and the local channels for that area will automatically be sync'd with no call required to their Move office to make them available. However, I am not a DISH fan. Why is DIRECTV unable to provide this same service?

AT&T/DirecTV doesn't really care about RV'ers. That's why many have switched to Dish Network.

The FCC didn't renew the rule that allowed all providers the use of the DNS channels, a DTV RV ccount never allowed you to get the local channels only the DNS channels.

Been fulltime for 15 years. Have always been able to call in and change to the local channels with no fee. I also paid for the East/West service.

The Stellar Act allowed DirecTV (with waiver) to provide the DNS channels (out of market networks) for a residential address. This was for homes that had no in-market locals of their own (not very common anymore).

The Act not receiving governmental renewal means that DirecTV may no longer provide DNS channels to residential accounts.

However, a RV-only account (Travelers Package) might still get the DNS channels. That info is what is still being waited on.

With DirecTV you can only get the locals for your home address, and only while within the area's spot beam. Travel outside of that and you use a regular antenna to pick up locals within range.

A mover's order is $199.00 each time one is placed. Csrs should have been able to tell you that.

Residential account may only change the service address with a Movers order. It is not a mobile account, but intended for an actual home. And that address determines not only locals and RSNs, but the taxes you are required to pay.

If it has been at least 12 full months of active service since your original install/last move, with account in good standing, then Movers order is normally free. Otherwise the Movers order is $199.

Since you don't live in a traditional residence, but full-time RV, then you should have been set up on the Travelers package for an RV-only account. You get the DNS channels, which are the major network feeds for the most common local channels, from the east/west coast accordingly. Area specific locals are pulled up by regular antenna instead.

Unfortunately DirecTV is mainly built around having a permanent residence, with the convenience of occasional RV use. Full-time RV that is not permanently parked is not a big part of their business model.

Exactly - However, there are now 1 million people residing fulltime in RVs and the great majority of us are on the move regularly. The extended network package - east/west coast is being discontinued 1 June 2020 due to a new law having been passed. My point is Dish has recently announced that people that are mobile will be able to stop having to call in everytime they change locations in order to get the locals for their new area - it will be an automatic pick-up thru the dish. If they can do it - ATT/Directv should be able too....the technology is there.

The law expired, there is no new law. As stated DTV will not give you local channels. To get local channels you have to use an OTA antenna connected to the TVs digital tuner.

Just because one company does it doesn't mean another company will (if they can in the first place).

At this time DirecTV is not built around providing locals on a often changed address. For now, using a regular antenna with the TV is the option for RVs.

Curious if it will be left like this or down the road they will come out with new options as a result.
