Loss of out-of-market channels

We've just been notified that we are losing our out-of

-market ABC, CBS etc. channels due to congress messing up the TELAR Act. Is there any fix? There are no local channels available.

Check www.directv.com/locals to verify what you should get. If there is a CBS, ABC, etc. affiliate then out-of-market (DNS) locals are not allowed. If DNS channels are being removed then you should already have the corresponding locals. If you don't and the DSN channels are being removed, then that should only be done if you are about to have an in-market ABC and CBS available.

@Juniper

Here is the result of your link:

"We are sorry we do not carry these local channels in your area yet." The notification did not even hint that they were going to be added, and the rep @DTV that I talked to said they were expecting a loss of customers, probably to Dish. That is what we will do if necessary, but it will be a big hassel with four receivers in home, shop and RV.

No. There is no fix. I have had DNS from C-band days, and continued when I converted to DBS with DirecTV (service through Pegasus from '94 until accounts acquired by DirecTV in '05), and have had DNS without interruption throughout. I am still in a market with no network LIL, OTA, or cable (see attachment), and would still have been eligible for DNS even without grandfathering, under the rules set to expire at the end of May. The expiring version of the STELA that has not been extended by congress, with slightly varying name acronyms, was revised at the introduction of DBS, to include it with C-band reception, and was set to expire after 5 years accounting for changes in technology, programming and / or service coverage that would it no longer necessary. A revision has been issued every 5 years, at the time of expiration of the act in effect at the time, until now. STELA expired officially at the end of December, and a final extension to terminate DNS to the end of May was granted to DirecTV ATT to provide LIL to the dozen DMA's that are still missing some or all network LIL, and after two decades of re-issuing SHEVA, SHREVA, ... whatever the revision was called, congress relented to the network broadcast lobby, and declared, "DBS dragged its feet, and now NOBODY gets DNS, even those who would qualify with the intent of the legislation, to provide network coverage to those who have no other technical option." (RV accounts are not subject to the STELA provisions). Those of us who would still be eligible, because we will still not have network LIL, OTA, cable, will not be an exception.

Ugh, well then I hope then more nearby locals start allowing satellite providers to have them for your addresses.

Nothing to do with locals allowing satellite providers to have them. DirecTV does not broadcast network LIL into a dozen DMA's. Their choice. They have been given the option to do so for over a decade, when re-usable frequency spot-beam technology first became operational with DirecTV 7S, and chose not to. Dish does broadcast network LIL into all DMA's, mostly because they previously were flagrantly providing DNS widespread to ineligible subscribers, were then prohibited to provide DNS to anyone for years, and were only recently allowed to re-establish DNS, by accomplishing network LIL for all DMS'a and diligently certifying any and all accounts. ATT DirecTV has ignored the provision to supply all DMA's and congress responded to the broadcast lobby and decided not to continue with another 5-year extension.

Clarification: Dish did get its house in order, but they are under the same act as DirecTV and will also suspend all active network DNS service at the end of May. However, since they did comply and now cover all DMA's, nearly all of those zip codes within those DMA's will have "local" (the nearest) network affiliate broadcast LIL, where DirecTV will have no network LIL or DNS available at all.

@dns-ny-2-la, I'm impressed at your knowledge about dns I used to know all of that too (in my dish Network employee days and my Early DirecTV days) over the years I did forget a little of it but you refreshed my memory and for that I thank you. you're 💯🎯

@nabukl, you're welcome. What knowledge I've accumulated about DNS (DirecTV specific) is a byproduct of work and as a customer. As an engineer and manager, I worked on about half of all of the DirecTV satellites ever built at both Hughes Space & Communications (now Boeing Satellite Systems) and Space Systems Loral (now Maxar Systems), dating back to DTV1, DTV2, and DTV3 in the early '90's. Remember the RCA 8-bit units (RCA initially had an exclusive as the sole receiver and antenna provider for the first 18 months of DTV service). Those were $699 and $799 retail systems, never discounted because RCA had no competition, and Hughes did not offer an employee discount, so I refused to buy one, but testing designated me to test and supplied me with a system. Prior to the introduction of LIL, especially those with rural (Pegasus) installations, where there was no qualified OTA signal strength, and no affiliate waiver required, everybody with Pegasus was eligible and opted for DNS (initially $1.50 for each E & W network). I am just an original holdout DNS cradle to impending grave subscriber.

Dont let AT$T fool you. it wasnt ONLY CONGRESS. it was the LOBBIESTS ....Cable Vs Satellite Vs Re-Distribution Rights, and AT$T didnt fight as hard to keep rural subscribers availavailability to get the out of market channels. If your location does not allow you local channel access to ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX....too bad, so sad. You’re out of luck. AT$T didnt want to pay the redistribution rights to the Big Boys in New York or LA....SO, be ready to climb back on your roof and insall an antenna to see if you can find a local station to flip back and forth from satellite to over the air ” free ” channels. Mind you, you’ll also have to re program your TV station channels to the new digital FORMAT ie channel 13.2 or 136.8 YEA....and they wonder why people are fed up with Satellite. I’m losing ABC, NBC, CBS & FOX and have no way of installing an antenna on my roof at age 80. Losing Audience channels come May 22 they announced, now all my Main TV Channels are gone as of June 1.

THANKS AT$T FOR RAISING MY RATES AND HANGING RURAL AMERICANS, WITH NO CABLE ACCESS...OUT TO DRY.
