My Genie remote keeps turning on my AV equipment and it isn't even paired.

Turn off HDMI CEC, RC7X remotes don't have the codes to turn on/off any soundbars/ A/V receivers.

I am having the exact t same issue.  It just started happening a month or so ago. Never happened before.  So frustrating. Any button kicks on AV system and sub etc.  don’t want that for regular tv.  

but in order to watch tv the HDMI passes through the AV system.  ( bypass) when it’s off.   

I am confused at what the solution is.  Hoping you could explain further what you did or what I need to do.

This whole mess caused me to short out the sound on my Yamaha receiver.  While looking for wiring solutions, I moved my a/v entertainment cabinet back and forth against the wall one too many times and a loose wire caused a short.  Stupidity on my part of course, and my receiver is ruined.

Before I did the damage, I called DirecTV several times before I got an agent who seemed to understand what I was describing.  We tried a few things to no avail, and she finally sent me a new Genie remote.  I was very careful not to pair the new remote with anything other than the LG OLED.  The same problem occurred immediately with my Yamaha receiver turning on with every click of the Genie remote.

I tried to contact Yamaha about all of this, but it's impossible to get a live person on the line.  Every time I called, I had 40-50 people ahead of me.  I would leave a callback number, but they didn't return my calls.

While looking for a new receiver, I discussed this problem with a Crutchfield agent.  He said that setting the receiver to "pass thru" or something like that should remedy the issue.  I told him that my old receiver had been set this way and it didn't make any difference.

I haven't ordered a new receiver yet and continue to use the internal speakers on my new tv.  I'm convinced that this issue has everything to do with the use of HDMI arc instead of the standard HDMI.  Unfortunately, I can't get any sound from the LG apps like Netflix, etc. when using my Yamaha receiver unless I use HDMI arc.  It would seem that this issue is pervasive and that others would chime in.  No such luck yet.

This issue could have something to do with the remote code that's being used. Some codes work for other devices too so you may be using one that is compatible for both the TV and Yamaha receiver.

What you could do to try to resolve this is to program other TV codes into the remote to see if there is a different one that works better.

To do that, select "Try Next Code" at the end when it states "It Worked". You will see the option for "Try Next Code" underneath. Select the Try Next Code option to program the next code in and test it out to see if it works better for your setup.

We also have a White Universal Remote that you could try using. Its different from the genie remote. It does not auto program like the genie remote does, so we may have more control over what it programs to.

Thank you Jessika for responding to this.  I can't do any experimentation until I get a new receiver.  I hope others who are having this problem will try your suggestions and report back.  I will definitely come back and look for you when I'm able to do what you've suggested.  I do recall using the auto feature when looking for codes so you may be on to something.

I'm back to report on a possible solution to my problem.  My new Yamaha receiver and LG OLED C9 TV are both eARC enabled.  I found that one of the features of eARC is that you can disable HDMI Control (or CEC) while continuing to benefit from the eARC connection.  My older receiver and tv had ARC, but not eARC.  It was not possible to disable HDMI Control while continuing to use HDMI.  So with HDMI Control enabled on my old system, the Genie (satellite) remote was turning on my surround system because of HDMI "handshake" issues.

eARC does not require the use of an HDMI CEC "handshake" in order to operate: "eARC is not supposed to require the use of an HDMI CEC handshake to operate. Instead, eARC utilizes only the Ethernet HDMI channel over which codec negotiation and media delivery are supposed to happen."

I could be totally wrong about this, but my system is now functioning the way I want it to by disabling HDMI Control (CEC).  When I choose to turn off the Yamaha A/V system and listen to the TV's internal speakers, the Genie remote no longer turns on the A/V system when I use it to select a channel, etc.  This may not be much consolation to those who don't have eARC capability on your devices, but it appears to be a solution for those who do.  

I just bought a new Vizio sound bar and every button I push on my Directv RC73 remote turns on the sound bar.  I don't want the sound bar on for normal TV viewing and it's extremely frustrating.  I have CEC disabled from my TV and it still happens. Any suggestions?

Problem solved for me.

I had the same issue with Directv RC73 remote turning on my audio reciever

with any button on remote.

It was driving me nuts! I was just about to get another reciever and curse the Yamaha name.

I turned off the HDMI control on the Directv Reciever. Worked, Finally!

On the Directv RC73 remote hit Menu, settings, display, video and turn off HDMI.
