New to HD

I'm a "newbie" to HD programming, and have a couple of questions.....

To start, I have an older HD television.  It is a Philips 51" rear-projection TV (Model 51PW9363).  I also have the HR-24/100 HD DVR.  My TV supports 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolutions.  The HD inputs on this TV can be either component (Y,Pb,Pr) or DVI.  I have a "HDMI to DVI" adapter cable as well as the component cables.  Is one method preferable to the other?  I tried using both inputs, and noticed that the entire picture shifted slightly to the left when using the DVI input.

In the HR-24 Setup menu under the HDTV section, should I select only the 1080i resolution or both 480p and 1080i?  Also, I've seen quite a few questions about "native" mode.  I'm not really sure which is the best setting.  I've also read a few posts that recommend setting the TV "sharpness" control to 0 or its minimum setting.  Is this good advice?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Personally I'd use the component cables with RCA audio.  I would check only the 1080i resolution and set native to off.  You should get rock solid performance with that setup.  As to the sharpness control you'll need to experiment a bit on that.  Channel 359 has a lot of tiny printing on the screen that is useful for adjusting some settings.

As dcd says, use component. The shift when using a DVI converter isn't unusual by the way.  Set the resolution to a fixed 1080i with native "off", the chances are that the upconverter in the DirecTV box will be better than the one in the TV. But you can try checking 480i and 1080i and see if that gives better picture quality on SD channels. You probably won't see any difference.

If you get a professional calibration of your TV, the first thing the tech will do is set sharpness to zero. "Sharpness" is an artificial enhancement of the signal and is best not used at all. But certainly start with it at zero and then increase it from there.

Many thanks to you, texasbrit, and also to you dcd.  Your suggestions were extremely helpful.  I abandoned my DVI cable and am using the component cables.  I made sure native mode was off, put a check mark for only 1080i on the resolutions menu and reduced sharpness to zero.  The result is an excellent picture!  Thank you both very much!
