What is the exact on-screen message?

What DVR/Receiver model numbers do you have?

How is the DVR/Receiver connected to your TV?

Is the TV set to the correct Video INPUT/SOURCE for your DirecTV box?

Is the DVR/Receiver powered ON?

What troubleshooting have you tried so far?
