Vacation Home or Second Home issues

You can still take a home receiver to another place but you will lose local channels if you are outside of the local spot beam while this is against the TOS there is no way to track the receivers.  DTV service is based on the number of authorized TVs on the account so of course a DTV app will not cast or stream to an external TV.  To stream to a TV you get a streaming service.

First, moving one of your receivers to a second location has never been "legal", its againsta Directv's terms of service. That said, many people have done it.But today, if your receivers are genie clients it can't be done at all because they won't work away from the Main Genie server.

If your receivers are not genie clients, then they will still work at a second location if the dish there is the correct type. As shannon02 posted, you might not get your locals there depending on the distance. And its still technically " illegal", but Directv has no way of knowing that, unless you try to get them involved, because they can't track your receivers.

As far as the streaming issue is concerned, if the DTV app allowed you to cast to another TV, that would mean you could avoid paying for  one TV which would break Directv's agreements with its program suppliers. They could build a special app and charge you monthly but so far they haven't though this worthwhile.

Actually Dtv did have a "vacation home" policy many years ago, where they would allow you to have receivers set up in a vacation home that used your normal account.  The folks at Loyalty told me about it many years ago and told me I had been "grandfathered" into that service if it was needed... however, at the time I did not have a need for it.

When I spoke to the Loyalty team about it yesterday, they told me that program had been cancelled some years in the past... possibly when Dtv was purchased by AT&T, or possibly even before that they did not have any specific information... just that it had once existed, but no longer does.

They could "suspend" the service at my home in Utah and start service here in Las Vegas, but as I have a daughter and grandchildren living at my Utah home, that is not an option.

I suppose I will need to reconsider my options... at least there are numerous options now available.

The DirecTV app was never intended to allow streaming to a TV. This is because their billing model has always been to pay for each authorized TV on the service. So that is well before AT&T. DirecTV is built as service by satellite. They are not a streaming provider. Any mobile options are secondary perks and for on the mobile only.

The physical service address determines locals received, allowed Regional Sport Networks (RSNs), and the taxes you are required to pay. Though locals and RSNs are spot beamed, taxes cannot accommodate receivers in multiple locations. Also there is the risk of account sharing (another household having service without their own account). DirecTV let it slide for very long, but having boxes active at multiple locations has been against the Terms of Service and Federal regulations. Since AT&T took over, they are more strictly following the rules and the intent of them.

So each address is supposed to have their own account. If you go back and forth between places, you simply suspend one while at the other.

Nobody will give you a call. This is a public forum of other customers, and like many other businesses AT&T/DirecTV does not call you because you request it. You want to talk with them, then you make the call. But all they can do is explain once more how this works. You may not like it, but these are how 2nd home and mobile perks work.
