Your TV is not in HD message
I have discussed this with at least five people at DirecTV, including the Customer Advocacy Team. I was told there was nothing they could do about it. I told them is was none of their concern how I choose to connect my receiver to my other components and that this error message was totally ludicrous. I accused them of causing these errors on purpose and then telling usn the only was to correct them is to buy an HD DVR from them for $200 up front and $7 a month. I refuse to pay them more money to correct a problem they created.

Look at all the other posts on the subject. It's because you have other things attached to the SD output of the DVR, and the DVR is not capable of delivering guide data in both SD and HD form at the same time, since the appearance of the new HD GUI.
As is posted a number of time, if you get a component to composite converter, and connect it between the DVR and the modulaltor, this will overcome the problem.
And none of us here work for DirecTV, so don't shoot the messenger. All we can do is tell you what's going on and why. And the response you are getting from DirecTV is, other using the converter I mention, completely true.

This is what I used to do when I had cable (because they letterbox the content via S-video) and I can tell you that while it works, it significantly reduces the video quality.
I'm concerned about this issue as well because I like to record programs to my DVD recorder (the reason why I switched to DirecTV) but I like to watch my programming in HD otherwise. Do you know why they can't just downrez the guide through the analog outputs regardless of which resolution the receiver is set to use? They do this with the programming itself, so I don't see why it would be an issue.
(or perhaps a future enhancement to display the guide in SD at all times?)

I did. I first spoke to a very nice tech support rep who tried extremely hard to help but unfortunately she only came to the conclusion that I had already realized... there's currently no way to avoid that error message without switching the resolution settings back and forth all the time. She did submit a suggestion to fix it however, and then I also submitted the suggestion via the DirecTV contact us page. I received a response that sounds like they have actually submitted it to the set top box engineering team. I'm going to hold out hope that this is true and they will address it once the rollout of the HDGUI is complete. After all, they created the HDGUI at the constant request of customers, so obviously they DO pay attention to customer feedback.
