Terrible APP
Having gone back to Direct TV after a few years of being with Dish, I was terribly disappointed with the APP. I record mostly cable news programming and it seems that that is “not allowed” to be viewed on the APP. It seems that only certain recorded shows are available for viewing on the APP unlike the old Direct APP or the Dish APP which truly allowed you to watch your programming anywhere anytime ( which I used to do, even when traveling abroad). I was told the APP is separate from my satellite service as if it’s just some sort of perk I was allowed to access but it wasn’t part of my tv package??? Really? It wasn’t sold to me that way. We have trouble with internet sometimes so for now I have stayed with satellite fully expecting to get the full service of the excellent APP that used to be available that included access to all of my DVR programs not just what was available for streaming. What is Direct TV going to do to fix this situation?

DirecTV is slowly rolling out to the new app some updates including returning features of the old app. They announced this a little while ago and advised it would take some time.
As for the app being "separate", it just simply isn't a guaranteed perk. They are a satellite service first and foremost, so streaming options are secondary to what the service is for. But as mentioned, the new app (instead of running different ones for DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM) is being actively updated over the coming weeks.

There is suppose to be an update in August but not all channels are allowing DTV to stream their programs to the app.

Well, this is still unsatisfactory as it used to be one of the selling factors of Direct TV as well as Dish. I know I am behind the times but when the internet goes down and it takes 6 days for AT&T to get out to make repairs and then the other week it went out 3 days due to work in the neighborhood, so for now I am sticking with old school satellite. But I used to have access to ALL of my recordings in the past with Direct TV and until a few weeks ago I had the same service with Dish. Really crummy service.

It may be unsatisfactory for you, but realistically a new app is not going to be magically perfect from the get-go. So it is updating in stages. Eventually only small patches would be expected to keep it running smoothly, but right now it is big feature releases as they are ready.
Also keep in mind that management of DirecTV has moved to the new co-owner. AT&T may retain some ownership, but they have stepped away from being in direct control.
As channels launch their own streaming services, they have started restricting what a TV provider is allowed to stream to an app. It is like the channel owners have their hands in two pots of revenue, but are having them fight each other (from my perspective).
