Monthly Channel Guide
I am writing for a friend, at present incarcerated at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton. He tells me the television service is Direct TV and he receives programming out of Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as New Jersey. He also maintains he has seen a printed monthly guide. It looks as if there are varied guides available according to specific packages. I have no idea of any of the details or extent of the service he receives I presume the account has been set up through some state department of New Jersey. I would like to order a subscription for him but I don't see that readily available.
I wonder how does one go about getting a subscription - akin to the readily available TV Guide? It seems to me, with so many institutionalized customers, Direct TV is missing out on a ready-made market - - - -
Many Thanks !

To get DirecTV service you call them or go to www.directv.com to order online. Just make sure you read order confirmation before install.
Printed channel guides haven't been provided by DirecTV for a few years as they go more "green". Any printed guides out there are either old out of date ones, or self-printed from the website. Here are the most current lineups: https://support.directv.com/dtv-programming/360 but be aware that there are a few updates this year https://www.att.com/tvchannelupdates/ and FX Movie is in Xtra, Ultimate, and Premier (FXM missing from those lineups in error).
As for locals, that is determined by your Designated Market Area (DMA). To see which locals are allowed, provided DirecTV has permission from the local: www.directv.com/locals
The prison probably is regulated differently on what kind of programming it can receive so I wouldn't go by that for normal home viewing.
Also there is no printed guide for DirecTV like the old-fashion TV guide. Programming changes too often, so guides of what shows are on when can be outdated shortly after printing. You have a guide you can search on your TV that looks up to 2 weeks ahead. You can also schedule recordings for your favorite shows, and since you are recording a show on a channel (marked digitally in a sense) if the time changes then the recording adjusts with it as the guide and recording scheduler work together.
