No proration of a bill is terrible
So.... this is the last time I will ever use any AT&T service. Here is some background. I called and cancelled my services and turned in my equipment on 3/2/24. My billing period is from 2-29 to 3-28. How in the world can a company bill for an entire month when I had the service for 3 days? This is terrible business. In the insurance world and other services companies, a company would prorate your bill for the service you used. Oh... but not AT&T. They want to (Edited per community guidelines) you dry for services that you don't use and don't have the equipment to even use their service! Well... AT&T will NEVER get my business ever again. If someone at AT&T wants to reach out to me... please do as I will "spread" this horrible policy via social media.... that most of their customers have no idea about since they have been with you forever. 16 years to be exact and I feel like I have been (Edited per community guidelines)d.

DTV stopped prorating the bill years ago, now you pay for and receive service until the end of your billing cycle had you not returned the receivers early you could have continued using them. The receivers didn't need to be returned until 21 days after the end of the billing cycle. DTV is not the only service that stopped prorating the bill.

Well AT&T and DirecTV went to flat billing removing proration years ago. They were not the first or the last as it has become standard in the industry. If no proration means you don't use the service again, then don't use any service ever again since this has been the norm for many companies for years. Other TV, phone, internet providers did this before and after AT&T and DirecTV. I would recheck all your companies as good chance you missed their changes as well.
Spread it all you want, that is no threat at all. Just make sure to be honest and let everyone know you decided not to read the notices of the change happening.
As a reminder:
Please read this if you receive DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse® TV, AT&T Internet, AT&T Phone, and/or AT&T Fixed Wireless service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and/or programming charges and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting January 14, 2019, subject to applicable laws, we’re updating your agreement(s) to include your recurring service(s)/programming charges and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. Your service(s) will continue until the end of your billing cycle but you won’t get a refund (prorated credits) for any remaining days left in your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

AT&T sold off 30% of DTV and no longer handles the day to day operations.

Although much of the info carries over, I wonder if the OP has DirecTV since they mention AT&T every single time.
@dinogreek
This is the DirecTV forum. If you need and help for specifically named AT&T services then they have their own forum. Otherwise as mentioned above, a new co-owner is managing DirecTV as a separate company once again which is why the websites and forums are no longer joined.

Not prorating a bill is bad service and shows the company needs your money. When someone cancels they want it cancelled within a day of two not weeks. What Direct tv is doing is ripping off their long time customers, I was one of them, 25 yrs. No one cares about a notice years ago. One has to cancel because their family member died and was made to pay for 3weeks and 2 days when service isn’t used. Customers get upset when they are made to pay for a service they are not using. If you cannot be compassionate to your customers then you deserve to lose 30,000 a month. Soon they will be a thing of the past.

Service is still active through the end of the bill cycle so you may use it for the remaining time covered by your bill.
If the account owner has passed you could discuss to see if with Death Cert and bill going to Executor of Estate to see if that would allow a special proration. If not, then I would consider a BBB complaint as that seems a reasonable exception. However, if they are not the account owner then I wouldn't expect it to make a difference as it comes down to the account owner made the agreement.
In any case make sure to read Terms of Service and understand this is how it works with most companies now. This became standard in the industry years ago, with DirecTV making the update 6 years ago (2019). This does not make them a thing of the past as other companies do this as well.
