Connecting DVD/VCR players with a C61 or C51 genie bos
I just upgraded to HR 54 genie with a satellite C61 on one other tv and C51 on another. I have DVD/VCR players on both the C61 and C51. I can get the satellite C setups to to play tapes or dvds but cannot figure out how to get them to record. Please help. Do I just need a DIN 10 pin connector and if so where do I connect that on DVD player?

You need the composite 10 pin din cable.
The red/white audio RCA plugs into the red/white audio inputs on the VHS/DVD recorder and the yellow video RCA plug goes to the yellow input on the VHS/DVD recorder.
Are you sure they are VHS/DVD recorders as players don't have inputs to record.
Just in case the C61K mini doesn't have the A/V output jack needed to use the 10 pin din cable.

Would suggest with your next free upgrade to replace a Mini Genie (Client) with HDDVR (receiver). That way you get 2 tuners and 500GB recording space, instead of stealing from the Genie. More reliable and capable setup with no difference in monthly cost.
The DVD/VCR will record from the TV in real-time as you schedule on them, not controlled by DirecTV equipment. DirecTV boxes only have outputs, so no other devices run through them.

Thanks everyone. I will try what Shannon suggested. I like to record some things on DVD/VCR as I have vacation home with no access to Genie or internet. Old school I guess!

Just be sure you do not connect the DVD recorder (or DVD/VCR combo unit) by HDMI. This is because networks don't allow recording HD content to external devices so it doesn't cut into their media sales. As such HDCP will error if you try otherwise.

Modem is equipment for internet so will tell you nothing about DirecTV. I suspect you mean the satellite receiver/HDDVR box, which the most current one would be the Genie (last model HR54) or possibly Genie-2 (HS17, Headless Server so doesn't go on a TV itself a new direction in their equipment design).
VCR gets connected directly to the TV itself. Though finding videocassettes to record on would be tricky as it is very old tech.

Your correct my bad I was referring to the receiver. Right now my mom can't record on her VCR. She has a ton of tapes to tape on. I will check to see which one I have tonight. I know its a black receiver with a blue light when its on with a satellite dish.

Her VCR used to work with DirectTV but once we upgraded we lost the ability. I actually didn't notice it because been so busy but lost power couldnt turn the menu on the VCR to set the clock. I am hoping I can figure out something so my mom can use her VCR. I can use the VCR to watch movies and set clock for her if I switch the TV remove from HDMI to TV. But can't tape on it....

I suspect her prior setup was SD-only so used different connections. The Genie (or Client box of it if Genie-2) should connected to TV by HDMI, not A/V or coax (unless she has a very old TV as well that is pre-HD). More info on model and exactly how boxes are connected to see what may be changed to get this working.
The very last VCRs stopped being made about a decade ago, and non-HD TVs before that. I would suggest being prepared for a backup/alternative for whenever her VCR (or associate tapes) says it is done.

The HR54 and all CXX receivers except the C61K have a output jack labeled A/V so you need the composite 10 pin din cable to connect to the VHS recorder, DTV may still have them or you can buy one online.

Hi...I have an HR54 receiver and my TV I purchased 4 or 5 years ago its not a Smart TV. But, I am trying get my mom's VCR to work with the upgraded satellite and receiver. It used to work on her old receiver but that was 18 years she had that. Does anyone know exactly what I need to buy for a cable and where to hook it up? I can get her VCR to play tapes if I turn the TV remote from HDMI to TV. But can't record

It doesn't work on a C61K as there is no output jack and Amazon shows cheaper ones but yes.
