cost to add add'l TV is $200+ WOW

My son received a new TV for Christmas and we jumped online to order an HD receiver and are being charged $99 for the receiver $50 service fee $49 install and $8.88 tax for a total of $206.88.

If we had this TV when our new service was installed 3 months ago i assume this all would have been included free with our 2 year contract? We currently have 4 TV's and this makes 5 now.

We simply can't afford this amount at this time. Do I have any other options other than splitting this TV off of the receiver from his brothers room? The TV's are only about 12 feet apart from each other.

Can i purchase a used receiver on eBay?

Couple of options. 1. If you can run another RG6 (SCC) line from the main splitter, then you're in business. B) From what I've read, techs do not (normally) add another, smaller splitter to create a connection from one room to the other during initial install..however, it may (or may not) be possible to get a good signal doing this..if so, would need to purchase a splitter from http://solidsignal.com (additionally, you will need a short RG6 run to make this happen). Am sure the TechKnow experts can confirm or refutethis..

Good luck!

since you are a new customer who got a free installation and gear when your were initially installed, is too early to qualify for more free gear.  if you give it a few more months, DirecTV might be able to get you a deal.  In the interim, you might be ale to mirror his brother receiver to his new TV.

I don't understand how this works? Does this eliminate the need for a receiver? Or does this just eliminate the install fee?

Please elaborate if you can.

Thanks

this is supposed to eliminate the need of an installed fee. But if the tech has to go to deliver and connect the receiver, you might still get charge the install fee

Also, you have multiple threads on the same subject.  best to keep everything on a single thread

You won't be able to order the add'l IRD without the add'l install from DirecTV. Furthermore, a customer that has been with DirecTV less than 6 months will get the $50 upgrade fee no matter what.

You would be better off ordering the HD IRD from Solidsignal.com or Amazon.com and then running a Sat Splitter (Common Cable splitter won't work) from an existing connection into the new room. Should work as long as the splitter is rated to 2300mHz and the coax is RG6.  It would be much better if you were able to run the coax from the room to the switch, though.

Keep in mind that if this user did all the work themselves they would still need to pay $99 plus tax for the receiver plus the cost of parts to make the connection.  Having already received a houseful of equipment (most likely free) expecting more free is unrealistic.

Why is this unrealistic?  You get the install free with cable.  You pay $99 for the equipment then turn around and have to pay a rental fee too?  I am starting to doubt my decision to come to DirecTV.  Seems like a bunch of hidden fees.  Power goes out, a fee to come out and fix it.  I don't pay all these fees with cable.

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment (model numbers), location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread. Thank you.

Why should I "Create a new thread"?   I was repsonding to your previous statement that ChuckieK was being unrealistic.  Again, I don't think he is being unrealistic.  I currenty have cable and I am not charged a fee any time someone comes out to our home for service.  I am switching to DirecTv because the monthly fees are lower.  But I see that they get you one way or the other.

But I still don't think that ChuckieK is being urealistic.  You would think that DirecTv would be more understanding since he recently signed a contract.  After all, I thought he could get up to 5 Tv's??!??!  But only if that is at the time of installation.

Whether or not you think is unrealistic, that won't change the fact that is  how DirecTV does business.

Because we are familiar with Directv's policies and practices.  We respond to these questions based on the "way things are" and you are responding with the "way you wish things were".  While discussing how things could be may be interesting, it does absolutely nothing for the original poster.

To put this whole thing in real basic terms.  Directv offers free to new subscribers an array of equipment dependent to some extent on the programming package selected.  This install is obviously a costly affair and is offset by a couple of years of subscribed content.  If a recent subscriber wants more equipment then they must pay for it, no more freebies until 2 years have elapsed.
