THEN ACTIVATE IT ONLINE MYSELF? I DON'T NEED AN INSTALLATION PERSON TO DO THIS SERVICE!!

You must get any DirecTV DVR/Receivers from DirecTV, or an authorized dealer, like Solid Signal. DirecTV will no longer activate any equipment from places like eBay or CraigsList. Most of that stuff is stolen, or still active on someone's account.

Yes, AT&T's new RC1 account system will not allow any deactivated receivers to be reactivated. Ebay is known to have stolen/ still activated on another account receivers.  Unknown if receivers from third party online dealers are still having problems activating them.  So DTV is the only safe bet.

I FOUND A BRAND NEW ONE IN THE SEALED BOX ON EBAY!
WHY CAN'T I USE IT?

I TRIED TO HAVE DIRECTV SEND ME ONE AND THEY REFUSED AND
WANTED TO HAVE SOMEONE INSTALL IT FOR ME!
I USED TO INSTALL DISHES AND RECEIVERS BACK IN THE DAY
WHEN GOOD GUYS AND MONKEY WARDS SOLD THEM!
I CAN HOOK UP A COUPLE OF CABLES! I DON'T NEED SOMEONE
HOOKING IT UP FOR ME! NO WONDER DIRECTV CHARGES SO MUCH!!~

You can still get DirecTV DVRs and Receivers from authorized dealers, like Solid Signal. Then you can install it yourself.

You cannot activate a receiver from eBay. That is not an authorized seller, but buying from an individual. Too many times receivers from there are stolen, the seller didn't realize the box must be returned to DirecTV, or attached to an account with an outstanding balance. Because of these kind of issues, AT&T no longer allows DirecTV receivers to be reactivated.

 

If you want to do the install yourself, then you must get the receiver from an authorized retailer. Solid Signal has been a good retailer over the years, but of course no company has a perfect track record. However you will not get the equipment free, and it still comes with a 24 month agreement upon activation. Since DirecTV accounts have been moving to a new billing account system, there have been some trouble activating boxes from the authorized retailers. Not an intention of the new account system, just some technical issue they ran into and is unknown if finally fixed or if they are still having trouble.

 

So unless the issue has been fixed regarding activating receivers from authorized retailers, then ordering through DirecTV is your only option. DirecTV will not drop ship a box unless it is a replacement (warranty or an upgrade that lucks out that is just a swap). There have been too many issues with those that claim to know what they are doing, mess something up and DirecTV has to go out anyway. This way they make sure install is done right and includes a 90 day coverage on the work done.

 

However, equipment has gone through some big changes over the years, including the MPEG-2 shutdown that started this year. What are the models of boxes you currently have? Want to make sure with getting another box that you don't have any surprise issues with your current ones in the near future.

If you want to change the dish at 72 have at it but aligning it maybe hard if your fingers don't work well.

I've had dozens of experiences with Solid Signal and never had one issue. They're good people. 

 

Regardless, as we've told you, you CANNOT buy a new or used box from eBay, CraigsList, etc. DirecTV will NOT activate it anymore.
