the HDDVR's will only support up to a 2TB hard drive.  But why not just install and external HDD.  it would be that much easier.

99.9% of DirecTV DVRs are leased, not owned, so you should not open it up to change the hard drive.

This is a start.I`m assuming that this dismatle of a HR20 is similar to a HR24 receiver. Thanks for your help.

No, the HR24 is different. There are six tabs you need to disengage from the bottom--two on each side and two towards the front. From what I understand, the tabs can easily break. I haven't tried myself since I'm leasing my receivers.

A note re owned versus leased.  We get a lot of posts from folks who say "I own" as though it had some value.  The fact is if your HR24 fails, Directv will replace it free of charge if you have the protection plan or for $20 shipping if you do not.  If they do replace it, they will want the old one back and when they find out you opened the box and altered the device they won't be happy.

I said. The box is owned.I got it from a ex Tech of Direct TV.Basically the only ones who own receivers. If it do fails on me in the future I will not get one from Direct again because of 2 year contract again.A receiver is not worth it.I can get another box from the same place I got that one from or better yet more than likely if the box fails,it will more than likely be the harddrive.I`ve just replace it myself or I know a place that will do it for me or just buy a external.Problem solved.I love my Direct TV service but I will not be signing no 2 year contract with no one again. If I altered a receiver that I owned I would never send it back to Direct TV.iIcan sell for parts also.Thanks.

Not true.  I am a tech and I do NOT own my receivers.  nor any of the techs that  I work with or that i have met from other markets.  But this is a moot point in your case because you are not responsible for this receiver.  the tech is.

Your case may diffent from other techs form Direct TV in the world, but I`ve called several times (Acess card Department)before I got the receiver from the Tech and gave RID and they all agreed i will own this receiver.unless I was lied to,I stand corrected.

Also for the record,on my bill besides the DVR it says Additional Receiver, not Leased Receiver. That tells me it`s owned. Some people will pay the extra money and not be in contract.I did it with my cellphone.Paid for a phone instead of doing a upgrade. Not worth it.I`m a 15 year costumer with them and I hope to be with Direct TV just as long.

Back to the original question.I may just purchase other owned DVR and do Whole Home and that way I can have access to more harddrive space form all of my receivers.I wanted to upgrade hard drive in my HR24 so I can have more space. That`s the reason why I wanted to upgrade hard drive in the receiver.2 owned DVRs may just work for now.Thanks.

darrick,  I'm curious as to why you posted to the forum in the first place?  You obviously had your mind made up regarding every single point that was discussed here.  I think maybe you pride yourself in having the service on your terms and wanted to tout that situation to some audience, no?  Sorry to burst your bubble, but a failure replacement does not trigger a two year contract, it has no effect on the contract whatever.

Hard to understand how someone can say "I love my Direct TV service" then go on to say that you will do everything in your power to prevent them from having an orderly business arrangement with you.

@dcd Well I posted here because between me and the kids recording stuff the 500gb hard drive is getting filled up fast.So sicne I owned the receiver I wanted to put in a bigger hard drive so we can record more stuff. Why not use an external drive instead of  replacing internal hard drive.2 reasons.1.Internal drive are cheaper.2.There is already too much stuff where my DVR is located.Like dvd player.wii, xbox,& other stuff. No additional space.

I was informed by the ex-tech of Direct TV that I received the reciever from about how things work around here and also another good friend of mine who use to work for Direct TV.They both left Direct TV for other jobs, but still have good relations.

As far as commiting to anyone.Well I no longer work.I`m disable now and I`m on a budget. So I don`t know whether I may need to drop luxuries like Direct..I hope you understand my concerns now.
