Land line necessary for NHL Center Ice?

I am interested in getting DirectTV primarily for watching hockey on Versus and the NHL Center Ice package.  The FAQs say I need a land line, which I don't have, connected to the DVR in order to subscribe to sports packages.  I called Customer Service and was told I could view the sports packages without a land line but in order to record the games I needed the land line.  Is this true? 

I have snooped around the 'net and there seems to be conflicting reports.
