New Format for reception

I was told that my Direct TV service would no longer work after June 2019 because of a format change in the downlink signal. A tech came to upgrade my receiver and antenna and determined that the new system would not have sufficient visibility because of trees (I'm in a National Forest and am not allowed to cut trees. There was no location that would allow the new format to work so I would have to switch to DISH. My TV still works!! What's the story on the new format change schedule and will my system really not work after some known date?

Sounds like you have clear line-of-sight to DirecTV's main satellite at 101ºW, but not the newer HD satellites at 99 and 103ºW. With DirecTV dropping SD/MPEG2 channels from 101ºW, customers are getting free Receiver and dish swaps to handle all three satellites and MPEG4/HD channels.  Shutting down the SD/MPEG2 channels is happening in phases during 2019, so your area may not have been hit yet.

Dish Network also uses a few different satellite locations, so hopefully you have a clear line-of-sight to their satellites.
