? on setting up a new HD TV

Hi All, We were able to get a great 52" HD rear projection tv recently for $50! Awesome! The guy also gave us the HDMI cable for free ... so I plugged it into the HD DVR that we have and then the other end into the TV's jack ... ? -- do we still need to connect the RCA (red, white, yellow) composite to both? I tried unhooking it and lost the picture and sound? Also, it's to be a 720p resolution ... but only seems to be in 480?

Does your TV actually  have an HDMI Input?  If not, the best video connection will be Component Video (red, blue and green RCA cables).

yes it does have an hdmi input ... thus the reason the guy gave the cable to us for free since he no longer needed it ... so wouldn't I not need the component (red, white, yellow)? or do you still have to have both plugged to each other?

HDMI is all that is needed for everything.

To be clear,  U can unplug the red/white/yellow,  unless you have an HDMI cable that is not working.  HDMI carries audio and video.

I currently have both plugged in... guess this is pretty easy ... just unplug the r/w/y composite and see if the HDMI carries it 🙂 thanks!

Correct.  With the HDMI cable connected, be sure to set the TV to the proper AV INPUT for that HDMI connection.  If you still don't get audio or video, try pressing the DVR's front panel RESOLUTION button to cycle the various video output resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i).  Some older TV's don't support all of those resolutions.

Now for a new question: how do I stop the screen from jumping in and out of different formats ... what should I and shouldn't I have selected for the screen resolutions? 480, 720 1080 ... also it has an equalizer ... does anyone know about what the settings should be? thanks 😉

In the HDDVR's Display Setup Menu, turn "Native Resolution" to OFF. Then uncheck all but 1080i in the Resolutions menu.  This will keep the DVR sending out a constant 1080i format regardless of the channel.

What sort of "equalizer" are you asking about?

In the tv's audio settings there is an equalizer for the sound ... I think it has 5 bar settings ... just not sure where they should be set for the best/optimum sound for it ...

oh okay I didn't know if there was a specific range or not ... also should I have the resolution/screen set on the DVR to widescreen or standard?

Is your rear projection TV's display 4:3 (square) or 16:9 (widescreen) format?
