Recording on Sony TV

I am trying to help someone out with their DirecTV streaming on a Sony TV. They have a HR 44 receiver on one TV and then two Sony TVs they just use the streaming app on. The question is how to record on the Sony app? Obviously there is no record button on the Sony remote and I don't see any option to record in the app. The app works fine otherwise and you can see recordings in the library. What am I missing?

If you are using DirecTV Streaming, a HR44 will not work. That is a DirecTV Satellite receiver and won't work when you are streaming.

@lou_do They are a satellite subscriber. Satellite subscribers are able to use the streaming app as well. The apps work fine other wise and are able to see the recordings on the 44.  I just haven't been able to figure out how to set a recording in the Sony DirecTV app.

Then this is in the wrong forum.  Moving to a satellite forum.

DTV sat can only be recorded on the HR44 and then streamed to mini clients on each TV.   AFAIK the DTV app can't record anything.

@Jrandomuser The issue is with the streaming app so although the customer is a satellite subscriber the appropriate forum is the streaming forum as that is where there most likely to be other Sony streaming app users.

You might think that - DirecTV is trying to make "DirecTV via Satellite" and "DirecTV via Internet" seem like the same thing, just 2 different ways, and that the app is the same for both.  But even if it is the same app, it doesn't behave the same for streaming vs satellite subscribers.  In this case, the difference is a big one.  Stream uses a cloud DVR - the storage is in DirecTV's servers, the content is available anywhere, etc.  Satellite uses a DVR that is physically built into the "main" set top box (satellite receiver), and is only accessible through that.  Also, as was pointed out, the app (for satellite subscribers) is apparently not able to request (program) a recording be made (which would go into that set top box).  The app can request a recording be made for Stream ("via Internet") subscribers - and that recording would go into "the cloud".  Because of these differences - even if they are using the app - it is best for satellite subscribers to ask questions to other satellite subscribers.

DTV sat doesn't have servers and DTV streaming started as an AT&T service that used their servers (still does) and they where separate services until AT&T sold off 30% of DTV sat and added the streaming service also. The new partner is now trying to combine the 2.

Since you are a satellite customer you can’t record anything with the app.

@Good4u

This is using the secondary features for a DirecTV (satellite) customer. So this is not for the DIRECTV STREAM forum as that is a separate service. A app/streaming services sub-forum of the satellite forum would have sorted this better.

Satellite customers can only record on the receivers. They don't have a cloud DVR option like DIRECTV STREAM.

Bottom line: They cannot record on the Sony app.

@shannon02 Actually DirecTV was streaming as part of their satellite service before AT&T bought them. It was only after AT&T bought them they offered it as a separate service. And what a mess if names they had. AT&T TV, DirecTV Now, AT&T Now, and DirecTV Stream with or without device. In fact, they used to have YouTube available as an app on the DVRs.

On Demand uses the channels servers, DTV sat doesn't need internet to work so there is no need for servers.  Youtube changed their format and made it incompatible with DTV plus launching their own TV service making them a competitor.

There is only 1 DTV app that can be downloaded from different places like the Apple store, Google Play or the TVs app store, there is no "Sony" app.

DirecTV has streaming as secondary perks.

A full streaming provider (AT&T TV, DIRECTV STREAM, etc.) is a different provider.

The forum is divided for satellite and STREAM customers. Since streaming options are way different between the two, you should post under which service you have.

YouTube was a 3rd party app included on the boxes years ago. When YouTube launched their paid service it was removed as they were a competitor at that point.

Satellite customers cannot record on the app.

Apps are designed for specific platforms. An iOS app is not the same app as an Android app even if they are functionally the same. I only referred to it as the Sony app to distinguish it from a client. It is interesting that the app acts some what like a client in that it sees the server recordings but apparently does not have the ability to set recordings.

The DirecTV app (regardless for what device; Roku, 'smart' TV, Firestick, etc.) has replaced the old separate app. DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM are now using the same platform, but with different permissions since both services do work differently.

There are new/returning features supposed to be launching within the next couple of months. There is a pinned official thread with the announcement. They do caution not everything will be available, I guess while they smooth it out. So expect it might be a bit limited in the early days.
