Vacation Home

I have a vacation home in Florida. I carry my equipment from Missouri to Florida. I spend six months at both locations. When I started this program 3 years ago I was asked to sign a 2 year contract, which I did. Today I terminated my Direct TV service. The person I spoke with said I have a new 2 year contract which started in May. This would coincide with my return to Missouri from Florida. How can I be in a new 2 year contract which I did not agree to. My billing address has never changed. The TV service package has not changed but they want to charge me $400 for terminating early. Any ideas?

The only way to change your service address to get your local channels is with a move order that starts a one year contract. You only get one free move per year after you have service in good standing for 1 year.

Service address must match where your boxes are physically at. This is because of RSNs, locals, and the taxes you are required to pay. That matters more in Florida as they have a satellite communications tax as well. For this reason the service address can no longer simply be changed just by calling like it was years ago. Too many people abused it, even unintentionally (such as have boxes at both places, or not updating address accordingly). The billing address is whatever you want, but the service address has to be where the boxes are. The way it is now, your Missouri and Florida places must have separate accounts with their own equipment, suspending one at a time when not in use. So your account was in violation of the Terms of Service, Federal regulations, and taxes.

However, the new 24 month service agreement would be something else. There are only a few possibilities that would have affected the service agreement date.

Upgrade of equipment, including adding an additional TV comes with 24 month service agreement.

Movers order comes with 12 month agreement, or 24 months if with an upgrade.

Some 12 and 24 month discounts come with an agreement for the same time.

If service is suspended, it pushes back agreement date by the same time as only active service counts towards it completing.

So with 24 months either an upgrade of equipment or a 24 month discount is the most likely option. You will need to call DirecTV to discuss exactly what the agreement was for.
